the original 1.14.4 json file formatting is borked (linefeeds, CR and such) and has 2 new entries for the obfuscation maps that may bug the (java) launcher. Reformat the json (via a json editor) and remove the 2 entries PLUS* block launchermeta.mojang.com to prevent downloading the json again. Then put it analog to other versions in a "1.14.4" folder (or create a custom version) in Versions. launcher should (down)load all required files and execute.
* blocking not needed when you create it as a custom version, adjust the id in the json accordingly
That doesnt help when ppl like to stay with the java launcher for justified reasons. latest java launcher verson is 1.6.91 afaik (correct me if im wrong here) and it has problems with the new json format too.
This issue is caused by "1.14.4.json" file formating being broken and obfuscation maps entries now being included in the 1.14.4.json file.
Download the original "1.14.4.json" file and the 1.14.4 Client here: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Java_Edition_1.14.4
Reformat the "1.14.4.json" file with a json editor and remove the obfuscation maps entries then add this fixed json as a custom version.
Or wait for Mojang to fix the launcher and json formating.

I'm having the same problem found in this thread: https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/java-edition-support/2985294-minecraft-launcher-stuck-on-preparing
It suggests installing the latest launcher. I have installed it, but it didn't help.
I wanted to post in that thread but it is locked.
What else can I do to get this working?
I've been playing as a way to chill out for years and I need a fix.
Halp?

This is what I get
It hangs after that. I was hoping it would fix itself, but no luck.
I also tried running Minecraft.jar with the --force option but that didn't work either.
I just noticed the "Duplicate Key" error message, what does that mean?

He literally said he tried using the latest launcher.
