You could potentially use the launcher profile option to change the "game directory", however...
...however there is a known problem when you do that with older versions (MCL-1384). It might work if you change the directory of any/all newer versions, and leave 1.4.2 in the default.
You could also possibly create a script (e.g. batch-file) to move things around before launch; or you could set up dual-boot with another instance of the operating system.
I'm not sure why the simpler solutions wouldn't work for you?
Why not just create another Windows user?
What is the problem with MultiMC? Thousands of people use it all the time; what issue are you having with it?
There are several reasons why I can't do the two previous options. I will try the 3rd. Thanks.

Use separate game directories for old versions.
How do I do that?
I only have one user on my PC.
Is there another way?
Is there another way I could just use the normal launcher. That one you sent me does not work right.

I have tried it and still get the same error.
No. I just prefer it and need it to use launcher profiles correctly
