I recently installed Linux on an old desktop that stopped working and decided to see how well Minecraft would work on it. I downloaded it and executed the jar file. But I got this message:
"The file '/home/lightpower26/Desktop/Minecraft/Minecraft.jar' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied from an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit."
So I looked at this website and ran this in terminal:
cd /home/lightpower26/Desktop/Minecraft
chmod 7 Minecraft.jar
This is supposed to give me permissions to read/write/execute. However, I get the same message when trying to execute the jar file... and the link that the message gives me is no help. I have found a Minecraft Launcher in the Software Manager, but it's an outdated version of the launcher and, as much as I liked it, I'd still like the new launcher.
tl;dr I need to set permissions for the Minecraft.jar file in Linux to execute it
Well, now when I open it, it doesn't have the error message, but nothing happens... Opening with Archive Manager says that it doesn't have permissions anymore
EDIT: Nevermind. I got it to work by going to the properties of the jar and changing in the permissions tab Access: Read and Write, Group: sudo
Why you set it to group: sudo? You shouldnt run it as root.
The permissions thing were because runnning chmod 7 Minecraft.jar its treated as 700, that is full permisions to access, no permissions to read or write.
run sudo chmod 777 Minecraft.jar
then, so you dont need to open it with sudo, run sudo chown yourusername:yourusername Minecraft.jar
After that, you can just right click Minecraft.jar or start it running java -jar Minecraft.jar
