I use Optifine for Minecraft. Installing Optifine is usually really simple for me. Because I have my Minecraft directory in an isolated location, I must use the "open optifine.jar with 7zip and open 1.9(x) with 7zip and copy everything in" This works every time. I've been doing this since 1.2.5 but ever since 1.9, when I go to launch the game, the launcher ends up downloading the vanilla 1.9(x) jar file and it replaces the one with Optifine installed.... Leaving me with no Optifine and no answers... Optifine doesn't give you the option to install to a custom directory when you double click, so I HAVE to use the 7zip extraction method... Any help would be greatly appreciated...
I have the same problem and placing Optifine in the Mods folder - either by extracting it's content doing installation or placing the mod itself in the mods folder - doesn't work.
for the copy-into-jar-installation: make sure you rename everything, even IDs. Here are the full instructions from the official optifine thread:
- Use the official launcher to download and start once Minecraft 1.6.2.
- Go to the minecraft base folder (the official launchers shows it when you click "Edit Profile" as "Game Directory")
- Go in subfolder "Versions"
- Rename the folder "1.6.2" to "1.6.2_OptiFine"
- Go in the subfolder "1.6.2_OptiFine"
- Rename "1.6.2.jar" to "1.6.2_OptiFine.jar"
- Rename "1.6.2.json" to "1.6.2_OptiFine.json"
- Open the file "1.6.2_OptiFine.json" with a text editor and replace "id":"1.6.2" with "id":"1.6.2_OptiFine" and save the file
- Copy the files from the OptiFine ZIP file in "1.6.2_OptiFine.jar" as usual (you can use the 1.5.2 instructions for this) and remove the META-INF folder from "1.6.2_OptiFine.jar".
Well, the whole point was that I modify the version jar file. using forge counteracts the performance gain from optifine. I'm tring to fix the issue where the base mc.jar replaces my modified mc.jar upon launch. I know HOW to install optifine, that I do. but the instance gets replaced upon launch no matter what I do
yeah, I agree. That's why I'm so confused. It's never happened before but all of the sudden the launcher just decides to delete my changes and install the base .jar

install forge and place optifine into the mods folder.

EDIT: Not the same problem.

Nevermind. Found out it is because Optifine isn't updated for 1.9.4 yet.

weird, because those resets should not happen if you renamed everything to 1.9.2_Optifine, deleted MEA_INf etc
