webrosc, this issue doesn't have to do with internet speed. For OS X, the new launcher requires you to download runtime, but for whatever reason it keeps restarting the download when you reach 59 mb, and then eventually you get an error that says "minecraft native launcher couldn't be installed" or something close to that.
As for you AtomicSuperman, I'd suggest using the old launcher instead of this one, at least until the issue is found and fixed. Go to minecraft.net, and go to download the launcher, but instead of downloading OS X, click on "show all platforms" and choose the option under Linux. This was the old launcher and should still work, I haven't tried it myself though.
Best of luck! (:

oh also its the official installer now for mac... if you go to the minecraft.net download link for mac, you get this installer. I had to download the linux jar file to run the game. Someone from mojang should probably pull it quickly
mine never reaches 59.92MB... stops at 59.90 or 59.77 each time.
