Did minecraft update to where it works differently than it did before 1.8? I used to be able to max out graphics and play with smooth fps averaging around 70 fps full screen, but I can't seem to get over 15-20 fps now. Does this have anything to do with Windows 8.1 either? I've tried using optifine, allocating RAM, game boosters/optimizers, etc (the usual fps fixes). It almost seems like there's a cap for the fps for some reason. My specs are as follows:
Dell Inspiron 7548
OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i7-5500 CPU @ 2.40GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon R7 M265 Series
Intel HD Graphics 5500
RAM: 12GB
It's a brand new laptop, so I figured it would run minecraft well. I've posted something similar to this earlier on the forums, I just need a good solution from someone. Is anyone else experiencing fps drops? The images show a smaller windowed sized screenshot, where I got 60+ fps, and the full screen screenshot shows significantly less fps. Also, fps during full screen seems very choppy. Any feedback will help. Thanks!

That laptop should be able to run minecraft at 150+ fps on max with optifine, as my laptop has amd a8 4x1.6GHz (overclocked to 2.7), a 6520m (iGPU), 8GB RAM, and Win7 and gets well over 120fps on max.
Make sure your drivers are up to date, get the AMD CCC drivers for your card. Make sure java is using your discreet card and not the crappy intel graphics, as stated. if the PC is new, there shouldnt be much else wrong with it other than a bad download/install.
I don't know much about updating my drivers or getting new drivers, how do I get AMD CCC drivers for my card? and how to I make java use my discreet card? Thanks so much for replying quickly too.

Sorry for the late response after responding so quickly the first time, I got caught up with and issue I was having.
First right click on your desktop. If there is an option named AMD Catalyst Control Center (would be all the way on the top of the context menu), click on it and look through the power options and performance options. IIRC you can switch which GPU is used in there. If you dont have that option, go HERE and find the drivers for your card. Once downloaded and installed, dig through the options and see if you can find it. Your FPS drop is definitely from using the wrong GPU (check attached pic).
So I was able to switch java over to my Radeon GPU, the fps of the smaller windowed view increased very much as seen in the screenshot, but the fullscreen remains choppy and not very smooth. I've tried optifine with this too and not much changed.
The size of the window will effect your framerate just fyi. If that is what seems to be the problem, you could try installing the shadercore mod because it lets you reduce the game resolution (but keep full res for menus).
Quick update, I managed to lower the resolution of my desktop which allowed minecraft to run well when full screen, but now my mouse moves by itself even when I'm not touching it. I know its not cinematic mode because I enabled it and turned it off, but the mouse still moves. It has to be something with the lower resolution. Also, when i hit F11, the "full screen" only opens in a small part of the top-right of my screen. So potentially fixed the fps issue, but now have the mouse issue lol.
For the shaders, just install the shader core mod & then go into the "shaders" option in the menu and on the right side you'll see "render res" which is what I'm talking about.

Does it work the same fullscreen windowed? Also, is your render distance at its highest?I just thought the game may be using integrated graphics, try switching it to your amd card.

Right click your desktop, and you should see "Configure Switchable Graphics". Locate java and set its Graphics Setting to "High Performance".
Also check your laptop's power plan is not on "Power Saver", but on "High Performance"

Hmmm…I get around 260 fps. I don't know what's wrong with yours though.

I added two more screenshots of my minimal settings with optifine, but still very low fps. The game plays laggy still as well.

I searched for the mod, but all I can find is the shaders mod and nothing about lowering the game resolution. Can you provide me a link?

I FIXED IT GUYS. Thanks for all the help. I made my 4k default resolution to 720p and restarted my cpu, It runs beautifully with Optifine at 160fps.
