There are also lag spikes too. And no, I am not getting a new computer.
I'm sorry, I don't think you've got much of a choice here. Your system is REALLY low end. What you've got is all you're going to get.
And on a system like that, you've got no real room to be picky about the way it looks. If you want it to look good, you're going to need either A. A better system or B. Have to deal with terrible framerates.
I have a old 2GB laptop, but higher fps. (above ground 30-40, underground 60-80, fps record: 149 fps)
Some things that may help:
- optifine (you already have)
- close all background programs
- restart computer
- don't use VSync
- no more than 500MB of RAM allocated to Minecraft
OP Already has optifine. OP Has no background programs running. Restarting the computer is pointless. OP is not using Vsync. OP Most likely has the default RAM allocation.
I doubt you're running those framerates on a laptop with 2GBs of RAM. I've got a Quad core laptop @ 3.5GHz and 8GBs of RAM and it struggles to get above 80FPS underground on the default settings. That's with everything else in the system optimized as far as it could have possibly been.
OP, if you're really out of options here, there's one thing you could do if you've got a spare computer. Set up a Minecraft server on the spare computer, and connect to it using the computer you want to play Minecraft on. Minecraft has to work a lot less client side when it's connected to the server, so you'll be splitting the load between two computers instead of one. That should get rid of any lag spikes, should slightly improve your framerate as well, but not by much.
Also, tweak one more setting for me and let me know what the result is:
I'm the 3rd generation. The first time you see this, copy as your signature and add 1 to the counter
"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that bring total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

They only said that they had 2 GB of RAM, which is totally meaningless; I mean, I can get 600 FPS on minimum settings with Optifine:
More typical FPS; note that the first two are without Optifine, and as you can see from the biomes, blocks, and version (mega taigas, podzol, granite in 1.6.4?) this is modded (all of the screenshots with 742 MB were taken during normal gameplay; I use the arguments "-Xmx768M -Xms768M -Xss1024K" and use Java 7 which gives me better performance in 1.6.4 than the default arguments or Java 8):
1.8 screenshot showing my CPU and GPU, and insane lag spikes (which oddly occur at a constant interval regardless of any settings or FPS, as if my GPU hiccups every 10 frames rendered; Optifine does nothing at all and doesn't even change average FPS much, though it does significantly reduce lag spikes from chunk loading):
You'd also need to know what their other specs are; RAM is the least useful piece of information about how well a computer can run Minecraft, plus the in-game settings also matter.
In fact, this is what happened when I set the render distance to 32 chunks, not even bothering to increase memory allocation; surprisingly enough it didn't run out of memory, at least for the short duration I did this, although it did start lagging like crazy unless I looked straight up (256 MB of VRAM limitation, not all chunks had rendered yet when I took this, the 10 FPS was relatively stable until then):
See these threads as well, which tells you how widespread and ingrained the belief that RAM has a major effect on performance is - they believe the game is underperforming because it isn't using all the memory they gave it!
Minecraft Not Using Allocated Memory "My minecraft runs at 80 fps max at normal render distance, which is super slow considering how my ram I am giving it."
I have a 3 year old laptop, with an i3, 4GB of RAM, no clue what the motherboard is besides that it's an Intel; and yet I run at 30+ WITHOUT optifine. And at that, I have to limit the fps to that so I don't overheat my PC (I have a Samsung, BTW). You may have gotten a virus, or just need to clean out the old hard drive. Try and see if that works.
They only said that they had 2 GB of RAM, which is totally meaningless; I mean, I can get 600 FPS on minimum settings with Optifine:
It is not completely meaningless. If you've only got 2GB of RAM, you're not going to get anywhere. (And by this, I mean getting framerates that match your display's refresh rate) The OP's OS uses 512MB of their RAM, so they've in all only got 1.5GBs to allocate to Minecraft, but you'd only want to be giving Minecraft a smaller portion of that so that the system has room to expand. Of course, that's what SWAP is for, but we're not even going to get into that.
I don't see your point in telling me this.
Optifine does nothing, you're kidding right? Now you're just trolling. Go play with your 32 Bit Java.
You'd also need to know what their other specs are; RAM is the least useful piece of information about how well a computer can run Minecraft, plus the in-game settings also matter.
And I do know their other specs. If you had bothered reading the rest of this thread, you'd know I was the one to find their specs when everyone else got it completely wrong.

Minecraft Not Using Allocated Memory "My minecraft runs at 80 fps max at normal render distance, which is super slow considering how my ram I am giving it."
(I was a little optimistic about the underground fps though. On heavily customized worlds my fps is also lower. However, 30~40 fps is I think pretty normal. Playing with Firefox on drastically decreases my fps.)
On the 1.6 modded version with optifine TheMasterCaver was talking about my fps is actually lower. For his computer, 1.6.4 is great and 1.8 rubbish, for me, the opposite happens.
Don't know how you're managing to get that, there must be some catch to it that I'm not seeing. Possibly a decent GPU... high bus speed on your processor and all the components are utilizing it effiiciently. Dunno, so many possibilities. I'd probably have to see its specs to understand it.
Edit: Stupid phone deleted some of my post.
OP Has a first gen core processor, which is from about 2009 or 2010. Could be older, but I doubt it. Because of that their Integrated graphics are also first gen, and first gen Intel Integrated graphics... terrible. Don't get me started. I've got a laptop With a Core i5 M430, and it refuses to go above 30 frames per second. Ocassionally it'll get lucky and hit about 32. I've got better laptops though, so I gave up on it.
Also, OP does not run Windows. They run linux, and it's unlikely they've gotten viruses due to that fact. Not saying you can't, but it's just not likely.
OP, I've also seen some cases where Linux cannot fully utilize your system's hardware, usually due to poor drivers, and lots of times better ones cannot be found. Don't think this is one of those cases, but one thing you could try is dual booting Windows on your machine that way you've still got linux, installing the drivers, optimize them, and then trying again. If you don't know how to do this though, then it's kinda out of the question, as it can get quite complicated, quite fast.
Ram is the LEAST important for Minecraft? I've heard some crazy things before but that tops them all. XD
RAM's frequency (how much data can be transferred at a time) and latency (how quickly the RAM responds to requests) matters alot. If you have high frequency and high latency it should be good.
The amount of RAM is also important. Reserving a good chunk of RAM is also necessary for the OS to work, as Ri5ux stated above. The more RAM you have allocated to Minecraft, the more data it can hold in RAM and easily access it quickly, such as chunks. This is why RAM is so important for a game like Minecraft, because Minecraft renders/generates as you move. So, the less RAM you have, the more of a delay there will be when rendering new chunks (lag spikes).
I'm not exactly sure that's how that works, but I think I'm close.
Ri5ux knows a lot more than me I'm sure of that, so ask him questions.
My response to those threads you posted, is one word: VSync. (Plus they didn't do a good job posting screenshots...)
edit: here are some images showing that I indeed achieve that fps. Some random things with coordinates on I found scrolling through my uploaded imgur images. The most interesting one is number two: 72 fps using only 340 MB.
(custom world hollow mountain )
That's because you've got an "okay" GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of dedicated VRAM.
OP Has 2GBs of system RAM, and their Intel HD Graphics utilize a portion the system RAM, which lowers their overall amount of RAM even more. This also takes a good toll on their RAM's bandwidth, so Minecraft itself has even less bandwidth to work with.
The laptop I described also shares this functionality, which explains part of the poor performance.
I imagine you get a good amount of lag spikes though.
Get OptiFine
No.
I already have optifine!
It's still 18 fps!
Edit: I am also really sensitive about how good it looks.
Well, it's fine as long as there's no lag spikes.
I've had similar problems before, they were on bad or old PCs. So a newer PC might fix your problem.
Before you even THINK about asking for crash help: Guide to fixing and avoiding crashes
I'd turn on use VBOs. That's been seen as a major improvement to framerate.
