If you are using "open to LAN" option, you may be expiriencing UPnP network discovery service issues, or maybe if you use direct connection using pre-set IP address, your IP addresses may have changed ( happens if you reboot router, or turn-off/turn-on situation etc.)

Let me try to understand this: If you live in new york, and your brother in los angeles, and i send you a letter you both recieve it?
Somethings realy wrong on your network if you both have same IP, or something is missing in your sentencess. Could you explain us how you managed to get same IP on your network?

Ok,
I had the same problem on A Windows PC at my mates house.
What we did was we disabled our firewalls and tried to connect, We managed to join the Lan server.
Next we then enabled the Firewall and whent back through all of the Firewall settings and tried disabliling Firewall just to things that where related to Minecraft. I can remember what it was, But try that out and get back to me.
I play lan on my mac with my brother then after like 2 weeks we can't play together anymore
we use the same router so yeah help please
Do you guys both have macs?
1. close any internet using programs in the background and such. i know that cisco VPN any connect causes problems.
2. instead of using wireless, try using a wired connection to the router.
3. even though it's super obvious, make sure that your brother is connected to the correct internet.
4. allow mine craft though firewall.
5. run minecraft as administrator.
6. allow minecraft through antivirus.
Yes we do

Try Playing LAN with different computers, if possible.
nope not possible
Try Restarting your router and reconnecting the computers.
nop not working
Ok go to system settings->network->wifi and tell me what it says the Ip for both computers are

What is the ip that you share?
IPv4, even tho IPv6 also works, IPv4 is more common & is easier to write.
The port is a number after the IPvX and a colon, so give him this:
Your IPv4(if not working, IPv6):port given upon starting lan
If that doesn't work either, get a THIRD computer and make it host a server.
Remember to put its IPv4 in the server-ip line after the equals symbol.
Also, make sure you make/edit the generated eula.txt file.
Need to have this as content:
eula=true
we live in the same house

we both are 192.168.*.*
* is a number we have same number
There is some thing definitely wrong if you guys share an internal ip.
You guys are connected to the same network?
