I've allocated 8GB RAM to my Minecraft single player game, however while playing my RAM memory usage consistently counts upwards from 11-15% all the way to 88% exactly, then periodically freezes as it reverts back to 11-15%.
I've put up with it for a while, but it's fast becoming a major annoyance since it's been getting me killed during gameplay.
Is there a reason why this is occurring? And how do you fix the issue?
At 1 GB RAM the game is virtually unplayable, it tanks from 1% to 99% so quickly that its like playing in stopmotion half the time.
At 2 GB RAM its better, though there is noticeable stuttering every ten seconds or so as it still takes to the 99% mark.
At 3 GB RAM i'm getting more smoother gameplay for around 30 seconds before a slight hiccup of lag as the memory reaches 99% and reverts. Instead of a stutter, the length is more pronounced.
At 4 GB, same as above with a lengthier duration of smoothness but the longer the period, the longer the delay between 99% reverting back to the memory minimum.
It seems that the higher I go, I get a tradeoff. Longer bouts of smoother gameplay for a longer lag time as the memory reaches its critical and then dumps it's trash. Its like a guy with a problematic bowel.
The more frequent he craps, the shorter the crap, but the longer he holds it in, the longer the crap...
Horrible analogy I know, but it describes the problem well. My memory is shitting itself, and I need it to even out.
I've added the AggressiveOpts JVM, but really there's no change. Still got the same issues with memory filling up and then a noticeable lag spike at 100% before the reset.
Thanks for trying at least, though if you've still got suggestions i'm all ears.
I can tell you I had the same experience a year ago. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why Java was doing this to me, as all my other games worked fine.
What it turned out to be was my OCing of the system and my RAM, I backed my system down a tad and the issue went away. It wasn't Java but my memory losing it's place. So, unfortunately, it could be an actual memory issue.
Try the same server files on another system if you can, see if it helps or not, pretty much the fastest way to find out.
I'll see if I can transfer it to a laptop or something (probably not the best solution considering it's much more limited than my desktop) but i'll at least take a look to satisfy my curiosity.
I am getting the exact same problem. Currently allotting 7G of memory. It stops at 88% and resets down to about 14% then climbs up. I can stand still and it will still climb up. If I am moving about it climbs faster, but always resetting at 88% and stopping game play. My system is not overclocked. Did you find a solution?

Any ideas?

Read what Mr. Grim said about Java and memory allocation.
"We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far."
