Hello.
To cut a long story short, I have been working on an adventure map for my friend for about three months.
I was just about finished and was up to the final room when I decided I would install the Single Player Commands mod so I could create the room faster. The latest version of SPC I could find was for 1.6.2.
I installed it fine, and opened up the adventure map.
I look at the half-built map with loads and loads of chunks missing.
I was absolutely devastated; I was so nearly finished the map that I could feel it, and now I have gaps in the middle of it all.
I have experimented with the .dat files and nothing has worked.
Please help me - is there a way I can fix this? I've worked on this map, like I said for a very long time and it's heartbreaking having all of your hard work put to waste.
No, I did not make a backup.
Help me as best you can - Any help whatsoever is appreciated wholeheartedly.
I'm really shocked that Mojang hasn't ever done anything* to warn people about loading 1.8 worlds into older versions - but then they have NEVER allowed for backwards compatibility - once you load (or create) a world into a given version there is no going back, especially since 1.8 changed item IDs so that when older versions try to load the data they see it as corrupt and regenerate the chunks or even crash (new blocks will also disappear forever but at least they don't usually cause chunk resets).
This has even been demonstrated many times (example), along with reports of missing items, reset chunks, and so on all over the forums.
*Well, they do give you a pop-up warning if you enable snapshots or Alpha/Beta versions - but NEVER warn you for releases, as if there is nothing that can go wrong. Here is a bug report where somebody tried reporting a similar situation - their response was simply "1.6 is legacy."; they will also never fix any bugs in those versions (1.7 and later versions simply ignore invalid items instead of resetting chunks, only fixed due to the removal of certain items in 1.7, such as lit redstone lamps, which you aren't supposed to be able to get).
Anyway, without backups the only thing you can do, besides rebuilding, is try to restore a previous version of the save files and hope that you have one from before it happened (instructions for Windows here; if you have another OS they should have a similar utility; the save files are located in the .minecraft folder (click on "edit profile" in the launcher and click "open game dir" which should open the folder, or whatever you sued if you changed it).
Also, I recommend learning some of the new commands they added to 1.8, such as the /fill and /clone commands (the Wiki lists them here, you can also search YouTube for video tutorials).

Thank you very much for your extremely helpful and quick reply.
However, the link you provided above is only for Windows 7/Vista devices, and is not working for me.
I forgot to mention that I am running Windows 8, and if you could provide a tutorial for that version I would be grateful.
World Edit Wrapper for Liteloader. Latest version is for 1.7.10.
And there's pretty much nothing that can be done with that map. There might be a way to recreate a "fresh" version of the missing chunks but loading new maps in old game versions will always break them. Use save backups.
I opened the map in 1.6. It's a Redstone Ready Superflat world, so all I could see is SOME chunks of the map, and when I went underneath it, there was grass with the texture "Use ModLoader". If I install that and open the world in 1.6, will the chunks reappear or have the chunks saved as is?
You see, I opened the world in 1.6, then I opened it again in 1.8. I think then the world saved with the missing chunks, therefore being unable to use ModLoader in 1.6.
First open the map once in 1.6.4 (If you want to use SPC/official Forge World Edit) or 1.7.10 (If you want to use World Edit Wrapper) to get the map in the right format.
Then use MCEdit to remove the bad chunks. They should regenerate on next map load as empty chunks.
Load the game in 1.6.4/1.7.10. Use whatever tool you want to finish the map.
THEN load it in 1.8.
Half of the map is missing - I would rather bin the whole thing than rebuilt everything that's missing.
When you say "finish the map", you do mean "rebuild it" don't you? :L
The weird thing is, is that the chunks that are missing didn't even contain 1.8-only blocks! They've just picked these chunks and said "I'm going to remove these."

Did those chunks have any chests or items in them? As I mentioned, the game (prior to 1.7.1; this refers to lit redstone lamps but any invalid item will do the same - including every single item in a 1.8 world since the item ID was changed from a numeric value to a string) deletes whole chunks with invalid items (and possibly other entities); I've also heard of chunks containing villagers with "invalid" trades being regenerated as well. However, it is (in most cases) safe to load a world with missing blocks - the game actually has code that deletes any invalid blocks, rather than just trashing the whole chunk (e.g. I once loaded a 1.7 world into 1.5.2 to see what would happen; an entire mesa biome turned into a big stone basin as the hardened clay disappeared; no chunks reset though; the game also deals with invalid biome IDs by changing them to plains).
As for the file restore I mentioned, for Windows 8 you can try the steps here - however, you have to have it enabled in the first place or you won't have any backups. Also, it doesn't seem to work on any folder by default, no mention of appdata.

That will be the answer to my "Random Chunks" being deleted. I have noticed that all of the chunks that are still here don't have chests on them.
The chunks that are missing all had chests...
Yeah, the Windows 8 File Restore didn't work. I didn't have it enabled beforehand therefore being unable to restore it.
I've also tried a system restore. But stupid Windows 8 only lets me teleport back to after the world was corrupted - no later...
I appreciate everybody's help. I think I have just got to face the fact that I have wasted a month's worth of my life for this empty world.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

i recommend copying the world before going on another version in the main one next time.
Yes, I will do.
