I managed to find a working backup of my main world (albeit not fully up to date from when I last played). My current plan is to move a few things around using mcedit and then delete most of the chunks where nothing important is built with chunky. After that when I play I will have closer access to new biomes and items though at the cost of having odd looking chunk joints. My question is what are the dos and do nots for this process. I will be keeping the spawn chunk and end portal chunk.
One issue I've had while testing this is my nether portals are no longer lit and when I lit them my nether area is not in sight. Did they change how these work?
