I played minecraft for hundreds of hours of legit survival for quite awhile and then once I had done pretty much everything possible I took a long break. I would like to be able to continue my old main world and play new content or at the very least copy the used regions from that world into a new one. I will admit that in the 17 months of my absence I have forgotten a lot about the game and have no clue how to do this. Any help to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I have glanced through the newer version history info and was wondering what will be broken once I'm able to play. Have any of the following changed? Enderman farms, normal high altitude mob spawners, mob spawners using actual spawners, iron golem farms, witch farms and iron trench.
Also if anyone has any helpful advice on what is some of the most useful stuff that can be done with the new content that would help as well.
I believe if you open the world like normal and walk to everything you wanted to stay the same then close it and change version and then reopen it should work.
This is a older method I am not sure if it will work for 1.8, It basically loads all the chucks you need then when you upgrade any unloaded chunks will be swapped out for new ones.

I have dozens of full backups in multiple places ranging from pc/usb/backup drive from before I quit and I remember some changes happening to where the minecraft world info goes (can't remember other than appdata). However for some reason most of the newest backups don't seem to have level.dat or DIM1 files. I'm not sure what could have happened as I'm pretty sure they all worked a year and a half ago. I was very careful with backing up every major change I made to the world to make sure I wouldn't lose it. I've tried just about everything I can think of. I really want to be able to use this data to continue since I put so much time into it.
Mojang tried to kill iron farms in 1.8 and failed miserably. The Iron Trench and Iron Foundry no longer work, but replacing them is a new design called the Iron Titan, which is even more OP than all previous farms, AND doors are stackable now, making iron farms much easier to build.
Villagers now have their own individual professions displayed on their trade windows. Farmers (NOT any brown-robed villager) are the most valuable because they automatically harvest and replant crops. This mechanic allows for more automatic farms and is essential for villager breeders.
Witch farms can actually be made more efficient now, as it's possible to squeeze three layers of platforms into a hut's spawning space instead of two.
That's about it as far as the machines you specifically asked about go.
