Minecraft 1.8 adds a lot. Ok, but it also was supposed to improve game performance fairly greatly. But for me, it didn't. I'm lagging like crazy on Minecraft 1.8, and this is with all my settings low. It's worse on Minecraft Realms than it is on Singleplayer, obviously. I ran much smoother (even on Realms) on 1.7.10, but I really want to be able to play 1.8, especially since I can't play Realms unless I'm playing the latest update. Any help? Thanks.
Glad to see im not the only realms owner who is not happy,,,1.8 is unplayable,,i sit at 100 fps but still lagg, its the server not me,,check out the sky at night the moon stutters,,rubberbands across the sky,,the sun does this as well, though not as bad, the mobs do the rubber banding as well,,this did not happen in 1.7. Riding a horse or boat or minecart is impossible,i hope they fix it soon, its not me its the server.REALMS support is almost non exsisting,, where do i send a support ticket
I am having the exact same problem. I enjoyed hours of playing on 1.7.10, with no lag or bugs or anything, but as soon as 1.8.1 updated, my lag is so bad that when I am standing still, holding my enchanted sword, the graphic effect of the enchantment will take several seconds to move from pixel to pixel. I can try to move, but within one or two blocks, I just freeze and then lurch forward then freeze, then lurch forward. It is truly unplayable. I don't know whom to tell or where to report it.
On another note - as a warning - I thought, if this version won't play, I will roll back to a prior version in my profile editor. When I went into my game again, my entire inventory and every chest and furnace within 500 blocks was emptied, never to return, even after going back to 1.8 After I googled it, turns out it's a known thing ("Prior versions are not supported" goes the official line) but there was NO warning as I switched versions, just a "you are now using 1.7.10" and done. NOTHING to say "we know that when you go back into your game you're going to lose EVERYTHING, so be sure you want to do this". Very, very disheartening. If this had been my daughter's account, she'd still be weeping about it.
This whole experience has been very disappointing and disheartening. I hope we are able to get some answers about the lag. I paid good money for this game that is now unplayable.
I encountered the same problem and this to me is completely unexcusable... i have a very very capable gaming setup yet this 1.8 makes my game lag like im trying to run 15 copies of Titan Fall all at once. What the HECK HAPPENED!? how did this get missed over the entire year they were working on it? How did it make it through final testing? I am completely baffled as well as shocked that we have this problem staring us in the face. I for one would have NEVER expected this to be a possible problem, because to me this is such a severe problem that i would like to think it could never have made it through testing....yet here we are. And like my fellow victims above me,i have no idea where to go to report this and try and get some justice done for all of us. One of my favorite games i play at least once a day turned overnight into something i can't play at all, unless i want to wait ten years to reach the bottom of my mine. Anyone who can help report this and get it turned around please do. Thanks
I hit the 120 fps limit cap while standing still, if I simply turn my screen or move forward/backward my fps drops to 20.
This build overall for some reason runs terribly for me when I got great fps in other builds. So hopefully they fix it.

I am having the same problem. I ran very smoothly on my Minecraft server with 1.7.10, now it's very inconsistent. Riding a horse just causes the game to crash for me.
i just now downloaded and installed minecraft 1.8 i get zero lag and i have all settings turned on to maximum. and anything else that im able to turn on ive turned on. i seen atleast 150 to 200 fps consistently and no lag at alll here are a few screen shots and my computer specs. i took a couple shots with 1GB of ram then a few with 6GB of ram and played for about 30 - 45 mins per session and seen no performance hits at all. im not sure what it is but changing your setting to low should work youve got to be doing something else i for one do not think its minecrafts fault.

there is a bug report here mojang says it could possibly be just a hardware issue. minecraft has updated and maybe its about time some people upgrade as well.

I understand that yes some people probably should upgrade their computers. However, I thought the whole reason for the recent render changes was to help people with older computers. Now that there are problems with the new code the only solution is to upgrade hardware? Kind of defeats the purpose of the original intent of the new code changes I think.
I get lots of lag too, especially on servers.I used to get around 110 fps, which isn't too bad, but now i get about 10-20 on most servers. Mojang said they made chunk rendering smoother and less laggy, but so far chunk rendering for me has been exactly the same and a bit laggier. Kinda sad really
Edit: it has something to do with water. create a superflat world without oceans and place a bucket of water somewhere, you'll see a frame drop (if you have the same problem as me.)
Noticed it too. And my friend has done some testing and thinks that the lag is caused by water now. Something to do with the transparency or animation on water blocks. He created a single player test world with water, it was laggy, and then a new one of the same seed with sea level at 1, so no water, and it was fine. On my own server, if we run too far ahead and the world is trying to load in water, it will close the server. Normal land is fine. Hope this gets patched soon.
it is supposed to help people with older computers but minecraft has updated their graphics in a way that youre also going to need certain hardware thats compatible. kind of like how openGL updated and everyone wasnt able to log in if their cards didnt support opengl 2.0. the update with 1.8 was huge and made minecraft more compatible for more recent hardware. im not sure how old your computer is but a 10 year old computer cant run things any more. any old computer or one not up to par with current recommended specs for ANY GAME obviously can not run it. that link is actually outdated it says AS OF 7.5. so id look at the OPTIMAL section and go with that seeing as we are talking about 1.8 go optimal or better than that. it says for a recommended AMD GPU youre going to want to have atleast a AMD Radeon HD 5550 not really hard to get up to a radeon 5550. As for a CPU it wants an AMD K 10.5 based CPU or a AMD Athlon CPU. i have an amd athlon 760k its great. if youre running intel its asking for any Intel Nehalem-Based CPUs that would be ANY I7 CPU. also as for an Nvidia GPU it wants a Nvidia GTX 260 a 260 is super easy to come by i have a Nvidia GTX 750TI . as for the ram there isnt anthing specific but i would recommend atleast 4 - 6 GB not for minecraft alone but just as a computer as a whole then youll have plenty of ram for everything for JUST minecraft having 2GB or ram dedicated to it is quite alot if your system only has 4GB ram like for example google chrome itself uses more ram than minecraft on a heavy load. so pretty much if you have anything less than those computer specs it should be time to upgrade and the lag youre getting is the result of it.
I used to be able to get 60 fps on 1.7.10 and below. Now, I get a measly 2 fps.
