When I try to launch Minecraft version 1.3.1 or 1.3.2 in the launcher, it will crash on the MOJANG screen. Note this is only 1.3 and this is not modded.

Maybe for the same reason I still use 1.6.4 for my main survival world and others regularly play on Alpha/Beta versions?
That said, I don't know why 1.3.1 doesn't work because I tried it a while ago and it worked (the "bug" that causes sprint-jumping to rapidly drain hunger in 1.7 was actually an intended feature accidentally removed in 1.3.1 when the client-server merge occurred; this is why I ran 1.3.1 to see when this happened).
Also, you say that it isn't modded but the game/launcher seems to think otherwise; have you tried deleting and redownloading to be sure the download wasn't corrupted (the game know it is modded when the checksums of the classes don't match, which will also happen if corruption occurred)?

There are things called updates.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
EDIT: Ok, just deleted { _minecraft } folder, think it fixed it.
I just wanted to make sure that all of the versions I have work. I play a lot of maps and some are less compatible than others.
