You are lucky i can't even log on the server. It still won't let me on and it says there are 600 people on!!!It still won't let me on and it says there are 600 people on!!!
Hello, I had the same problem, I have fixed it and i'm going to explain how, but please be aware that the problem could have multiple causes.
This is how I fixed it:
1. Revert CB version from 1.7.x to 1.6.4
2. Remove Jason-API plugin (I don't know how that got installed), could also have been an incompatible plugin
3. If on Ubuntu, or other flavor of it (linux, centos, debian, etc.), use chmod 777 <directory path>, note that you must be a superuser to use it.
4. Start server again
Other causes/ solutions
1. if on the console you see something that says <plugin directory> (Permission denied) then all you have to do is chmod.
2. if the problem persist or the permission denied does not appear, then the problem could be an incompatible plugin that was installed and should be removed.
3. Corrupt chunk right were someone is, so when they join the server crashes, the fix would be to download the world folder to your desktop and then open it with MCEdit, then find an option that fixes chunks. See this page for additional info on the error: http://www.planetminecraft.com/blog/fixing-corrupted-world-chunks-easily/

Ok, I run a server with Multicraft and have been suffering the same error and of course my players too.
Here's what I found, and what worked for me. I noticed that the error popped on my face whenever certain player was trying to login. Everytime he entered the server, he got a "Internal server error" message, and everyone else trying to log in got the infamous io.netty error. People inside the server got kicked with io.netty too, and the server was no longer accepting any player. The Multicraft panel showed every player that tried to enter, like if they were still inside playing, only there was nobody inside. After a server restart, everything back to normal UNTIL this player tries to log in again, and all the ritual repeats on. I tried Region-Fixer to check the integrity of the files and the world, but it reported no problems whatsoever, not even a single corrupted chunk, nor player files.
What I did was I deleted the .dat file belonging to the player causing the issue (it's located inside the world folder in the server, and it's named after the player, for example my file was Liederkranz.dat). By deleting that file, the server had to create a new one when the player logged in. Obviously he spawned in the spawn point with an empty inventory, a fresh start. That solved my problem. So far, so good. I hope this helps.
WORKED! THANK YOU
If this didn't work,it may be because you have the plugin "Citizens" installed(NPCs)
You need to remove NPC's in the players.dat
Hi. I currently work at a host and our clients have been having this issue. The fix is simple, go back to 1.6.4. After doing some research and testing it only happens on Spigot and 1.7.2 builds. It has been reported on Mojang's site and is happening to a lot of 1.7 servers.
This is really starting to annoy me. There are no videos on the face of the earth telling me how to update my server back to 1.6.4. I do know how to change my game to 1.6.4, but how do I change my server? My message to all of the Minecraft creators is to fix that in the next snapshot for 1.8. Also, Jeb says that minecraft 1.8 may not come out till August 2014. I think we all have a long time to wait.
I don't know what kind of server you are running, but for me, on Bukkit, I go to their site, download an older build (they are all listed in order) and then edit the Batch file to match the file name of the older build you just downloaded.
As for the netty error, changing "online-mode" to "false" in the server.properties file seems to have fixed it for me. Now I'm just sitting here playing it by myself, running the server on the same computer I'm playing it on, so I don't know if changing it to false will prevent online users from joining or what, but I stopped getting the netty error after I did that.
This does indeed happen on 1.7 spigot builds, yet it is reported on Mojang's website. You may have to wait for a fix or a change of code.

This is a really old post, so I don't recommend posting here after this. This is an identified issue with some versions of Minecraft such as, 1.7.2 and 1.7.4. This issue is usually fixed by a client restart or a server restart. If netiher of those work, you can remove the plugins and mods and see if it works then.
Besides that, as this is modded client support, I recommend updating to the latest 1.7.10 versions of your mods.

Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but here's my experience with the io.netty dilemma:
I was playing on a server I really like for near 6 hours (no restraints here!) which is longer than my usual time on servers. I had to log out and do something quickly. I went back on and received the io.netty error. Bear in mind that I'm only a client and this is the first time I had gotten the error. So I went into the realm of google to troubleshoot after doing the obvious things (restarting Minecraft, router etc....) and I found this thread.
After reading it, I still got no solution. (bear in mind I'm not the admin on my PC and I don't have the fancy equipment other PC's have- oldish PC)
Eventually the error corrected itself and I went online. I spoke with the owner of the server since he was on and asked him about the error. He said the server had been having a lot of downtime as they were switching to a new host. He didn't really let on to much except for the fact lots of players were getting the same error. The server is a lot less laggy now and I have not gotten the io.netty error since.
tl;dr version:
Assumedly servers fault, wait for server to fix itself.
Sorry if this was misleading in any way or if I'm wrong. I'm not really good with this kind of stuff.
Got the same exact problems every 15-30 minutes, getting really annoying, I've had this problem on a 1.7.10 server but it only happened 2-3 times in a month of playing so it wasn't a real problem, now that I'm in the 1.8Pr3 server its getting on my nerves a lot, I got killed by a zombie but it was my ghost that was still online, I was mining in a cave and decided to continue, then I decided to disconnect after getting back at my base and when I came back, I was dead and all my stuff was gone because of this bug and the annoying thing is the stuff I mined and got back at my base was in the chests and everything, weird thing really.
So its now clear, got the same problem after updating server to the official 1.8 that this problem isn't at all in their priority list, makes me nervous each time I go cave mining, I never know when I'll have this problem and my ghost player is going to be dead I have to restart the server every single time, getting very annoyed.
Sorry but I can' take it anymore ,t can't play 1,8 SMP with this error anymore, I was just making final touch to a classic skeleton spawner and every time I got more than 60-70 mobs, I get kicked out of the server and I have to restart it, I did a test with a not so old server using snapshot 14w21b where I already have the same kind of setup and had absolutely no problems, server is on the same exact PC using same Internet Connection. Thye screwed something really badly and didn't solve it, we need a fix.

I am currently running a server with 1.8 and i have a few players who get this error. For some reason it seems to be the same time every day. Sadly I am going to revert to the old 1.7 server until these issues are fixed.

I really hope for a quick fix from Mojang, but seeing how old this bug is and how many versions it affects also no one ever got assigned to it, I think they don't really care about this one and aren't exactly caring about a small number of users complain.
I was having a (VERY FRUSTRATING) time with this issue, trying to connect to my own new server.
I tried heaps of fixes and nothing worked.
I was then very pleased to find out that when I UPDATED JAVA my server was functioning.
I recommend doing this before moving on to more tedious fixes.
Then again this was my own personal fix experience, so I'm not sure that this will work for you.
Hope I could help
Cheers,

If this is it then I can't connect to my server cause I have no way of telling the server owner to reset it. There isnt a server website.

Internal exception: io.netty.handler.timeout.readTimeoutexception
I got this problem after I setup a 2nd ethernet port on my server for later use as DMZ.When I removed the default route for the 2nd ethernet port, the default route reverted back to its original and the problem sorted itself out
This was also the cause of "
"Failed to login: the authentication are currently down for maintenance.
"it makes sense actually
good luck
