Attempted to download Minecraft after deleting it (for a fresh install). Got a "failed to download" error and a big "failed to launch" text at the top of the screen. It chokes at about 90% on the download.
AVG cannot be altered, it keeps going "buy protection now! Free trial expired!" So if the link scanner is active, I am unable to disable it.
Firewall is off.
Hosts file seems to be completely blank. Was there something supposed to be here?
Well, all that happens for me is (and this is after delteing the ,jar, using MulitMC, becoming and administrator on my computer, and taking my friends perfectly usable and error free .jar and none of this is working BTW) it goes to the login screen, i login with correct info, it says unable to connect to minecraft.net (i also have no issues on other user accounts and internet is obviously working) and even if i have the .jar file in, i cant play it offline. and by that, i mean all i get after clicking on 'play offline' is a black screen/window. ANYONE PLEASE HELP? T_T
Same problem as ukoldboy; Kaspersky AV turned off, exact same host file, computer just says "minecraft.exe couldn't be downloaded". A partial file (size = 0 bytes) shows up in the destination folder with a bunch of letters at the end of the filename, eg. "Minecraft_exe.jeuprgd" but it won't run.
I cannot get MC to install on my laptop now for some reason. (and have tried everything in the first post of this thread) After a full game sweep, I login for the first time & after hitting enter, get the New update available screen. (I've successfully downloaded and am running the .exe off minecraft.net/download) If I hit Not now I get an Updating Minecraft window and it says Done loading, but the green bar never quiiiite goes all the way to the right/locks up. If I start over but choose Yes on the New update available prompt, it says Updating Minecraft, but this time the green bar only goes a small portion of the way across & locks up while saying Downloading packages. There's apparently nothing wrong with my hosts file and I've disabled all antivirus & firewall stuff. (I just have MS Security Essentials & Windows Firewall) I'm getting ready for an extended holiday trip & won't likely have internet access while away , so I'd like to remedy this before the weekend if at all possible. As always, thanks in advance! (the laptop's running Win7 Home Premium 64x & has 64x Java installed)
I was having connect problems for a year. now i can update on my own. Thank you so much for making this guide. you don't know how much this means to me.
I still can't install the game on my laptop, (as per my original message close to the top of this page/only a couple posts up). Again, I'll be headed out of town this weekend and if at all possible, would like to clear this up beforehand.. because my destination is unlikely to have internet! (which is the whole reason I want to take MC with me) Again, the game won't fully install. The issue isn't in my hosts file, I've already tried disabling any antivirus and/or firewalls etc, and I can download the .exe off of the main site no problemo. Please help, as I head out of town Saturday!!
The solution to the problem I was having with "minecraft fatal error occured (4)" was to go into my router setting and turn off

Haii, Im on windows 8 i tried all the ways you said. When i try to play on the browser i will just freeze at "Done Loading" when i try the client i cant connect to minecraft.net and when i play offline mode black screen for ever
All my drivers are upto date too ?
I am having this problem as well. Sometimes it says the Address Family is not supported by protocol.
However the browser version works perfectly fine for me. I have tried re-downloading Minecraft and my java multiple times. Ive checked my host file and everything looks fine. i disabled my firewall and tried, only to find my minecraft was still not working.

It could be a problem with you antivirus then. What are you using?
So, I don't have a problem with downloading minecraft or anything, but a problem with session.minecraft.net
So, I don't have access to my router, and its blocking session.minecraft.net. But, as with other blocked websites, I can still access websites with an IP adress.
I'm pretty sure it has to do with my hosts file, although I was wondering if there was a way to tell my client to connect to an IP rather than session.minecraft.net, and if I can, what is the IP I need to tell it to connect to.
