If you are unable to download the minecraft launcher from minecraft.net, then something is blocking the download. This is most commonly AVG's link scanner or the hosts file. However, other antivirus programs and firewalls can cause this as well.
First, we should disable all antivirus programs and firewalls
1. Stop all firewalls/antivirus. If you have AVG, then you should only need to disable the link scanning module.
3. If it does not work, you will want to make sure that you fully disabled your antivirus/firewall. To do this, press ctrl + alt + delete at the same time and select task manager. Make sure that no processes that have your antivirus’s name in it are running.
If this does not work, it is most likely a hosts file issue:
1. Press the “Windows” key and “E” at the same time.
2. Open the following folders in the order given:
C:, Windows, System32, drivers, etc.
3. Before we edit the hosts file, we must make sure that you have the ability to edit it. Right click on the file named hosts and click property. If the option read-only is ticked, then you will need to untick it and click apply.
4. Exit out of the properties window for the hosts file.
5. Open the hosts file using notepad, or a program similar to it.
6. Delete any lines with minecraft.net in it, or ones that are similar to the ones below:
7. Save and exit the hosts file. You should be able to download the minecraft launcher now.
If both these solutions failed, then post on this thread with a detailed description of what is happening and a list of all firewalls and anti-viruses running on your computer. Also, including a copy of your hosts file would be helpful (The hosts file does not contain any information that could be used in a malicious way)

As of right now, the mac launcher is not working properly and does not update from 1.2.5 to 1.3.1. If you are on a mac, and this is the issue, you must:
The installation/update of minecraft is being blocked by some program. Often times it is your anti-virus that does this. The most notorious for causing this is AVG, but other antivirus’s and firewalls have been known to cause this.
The first thing that we should try, is disabling your firewall/anti-virus.
1. Stop all firewalls and antivirus. If you have AVG, then you will only need to disable the link scanning module.
2. Try updating minecraft now, it should work. If it does not, then you will need to make sure that all processes that pertain to your antivirus or firewall are stopped. To do this, press
"ctrl" + "alt" + "delete" at the same time and select task manager. Make sure that there are no processes that have your antivirus’s name in it running.
Disabling AVG's link scanning module:[/anchor]
1. To disable the link scanning module for AVG, you will first need to open AVG.
2 After the program is open, you will need to click on the link scanning module.
3. Now you will need to disable the options named “Scan incoming messages’ and “Scan outgoing messages”.
As in minecraft freezees after logging in after the 1.3.1 update?
I mean that the launcher freezes mid-update. If your launcher is just plain freezing, we will need to see an error report, thefriedzombie has made a thread about this. Generate an error report then post it on this thread. I will take a look at it and give you an appropriate course of action.
I looked at the Updating fix, tried everything it said but it didn't work. Whenever I try updating my Minecraft it will download, it hits Minecraft.jar goes to 100% then skips back to like 30% and goes again, then repeats before finally saying
Fatal error occured (4): failed to download minecraft.jar
Anything I can do to fix this? It's been happening for the past month or so sadly, I can't even reinstall my Jar after it get's messed up from mods or something.
Hey, I've just helped someone solve a host-file related problem, however, the person I helped had to ADD "184.73.223.40 session.minecraft.net" to the hosts file. I recommend adding this to the OP Elystus.
I thought I had put something saying any lines with minecraft.net in it should be deleted. Eh, well it is added now. Thanks Ninja

I read your post wrong. I read it as delete not add, I am a bit tired. I will not add this to the explanation as adding any ip with sessions.minecraft.net is not good. But, that specific ip, as Zombie explains, is from amazonaws.com. There is no reason that this would ever need to be done. You can get a clear explanation of this in Zombies post.

This didn't work whatsoever for me. When i log in and press play demo it automatically loads to 3/4 of the bar for the update then stops and doesn't do a thing. I'm running windows 7 64-bit with symantec endpoint protection. When i try to end the processes in task manager it automatically starts again

That's because this isn't your issue. Look at the following thread by Thefriedzombie:

New to Minecraft. Trying to use Mac OS X launcher. The download page says I should be downloading a 270KB zip file, but it downloads a 145KB zip. When I unzip the application and attempt to launch it, I get this error alert:
Cannot download:[/anchor]

The hosts file is not your issue. For some reason, your client is crashing. You will need to generate a crash report or give me more information.
The problem that you are having is a common problem with the demo. There is a fix for this by ThefriedZombie:
"Minecraft" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the trash." (Screen grab of this Mac OS X alert)
(I also tried to play online but the applet crashed. Online crash report .txt file - not sure if this is a clue to problem)
Any advice?
