I have the same problem. Was hoping and waiting 1.4 would solve all problems. It has not. I tried the compatibility mode thing the guy above said to do and it didnt work. updated graphics card and drivers. not running on a integrated network card. this is very frustrating.
This is just not fun anymore. It is really getting on my nerves. I am very mad @mojang team. At the place of fixing the problem, they actually add more mobs (wolves). Yes guys, congrats you will get a million more customers with the wolves ''that everybody find cute and cool''. Will they be satisfied with this lag?
Same with me, only extreme. I run my own server, on my home network. Its not a connection issue, as not everyone has this problem, and it's not my router (i connect via local ip, though connecting either way produces this lag), because my friends' laptops run it just fine locally. My computer ran it fine for a while, and recently it's had issues. I reinstalled minecraft, and then, like magic, it worked fine- for about 3 hours. Now its unplayable again.
Clearly this is a client issue, as my connection tests are fine. I have no mods installed, on either client or server, and i only occasionally use a texpack.
Any ideas?
(P.S. I apologize for typos, I am currently on my phone)
Edit: by extreme, i mean it will take upwards of 5 minutes to see chat and block updates. The only way i can play is by logging in and out after placing/removing a few blocks.
As a side note, messages sent and block changes made are registered by the server normally, as i tend to chat by typing on one screen and reading people's response on the server console. Also, the login/out trick wouldn't work if the server wasn't receiving data from me.
Quoted from the Delay/lag unplayable topic.
A bad network coding would definitely cause this... I wonder if some of the more skilled admin-toll-writers could cater to this issue, until notch can fix the minecraft client code.
I have my own two bits as well! (As well as random pork)
I also run my own home server that I play on locally. One computer runs the server and the client at the same time - graphics are "best" on the client as well with smooth lighting, far render distance, fancy graphics etc - because it's a pretty good computer. I'm going to call this computer "serv-PC" in this post. Another one, not nearly as good, just runs the client and connects: this one will be called "other-PC."
Now, when playing the game, other-PC has ok FPS when playing on low graphics settings. This is just the computer being crappy. It updates the map instantly, and there is absolutely NO Mysterious lag. On the other hand, serv-PC, running with some awesome graphics at 60FPS or so, takes at least one minute to chat, break/place blocks etc. It's wierd, though, because other-PC is changing blocks, sending the info through the network to serv-PC, and getting it back all updated, while the serv-PC is having issues sending data to itself. I have no lag on Single Player on serv-PC. I guarantee that it is not because serv-PC is not good enough!
The kicker is that when I had Beta 1.2, it was fine. So yes, Beta 1.3 is annoying! (I'm going to test it on 1.4 now though, but I'm not feeling optimistic)
The server that I am on has found a possible solution.
We have found a chunk of water full of squid. Hundreds of them. This chunk seems to be in the center of where the people who are lagging were when the lag began.
We have placed tnt right in the middle of the squid mob, and plan to detonate it soon, killing the squid. We are unsure if it will work, or if this is the same problem that ya'll are having. I'll post again saying if it worked or not.
Nevermind. It got rid of some lag that other people on the server was experiencing, but it wasn't the source of the lag that some people have. (Including me...)
I get this, but I always thought it was internet related because my internet can vary over time from the speed of a bullet all the way down to slug pace (stupid interfering wireless phone, cellphone towers its is running off of and wifi) but i get these exact problems.... Weird, maybe its some kind of file corruption, I know that 4 weeks back, this guy sent a virus out through the game to the people on my server and was taking control of people accounts and griefing with them... Maybe someone is doing this but corrupting code and files instead....

I'm running craftbukkit, and even with using the /butcher 20000000 (commands that kills all living entities except players in a radius of 20000000) i'm still experiencing the problem.

Yeah, We actually just blew up the whole squid pack, and although some lag for other people are gone, My friend's and I lag is still there.
Balls. Back to the drawing board...
And I tried the 'limit framerate', nothing happened.
I need to know, are you guys using an AMD processor. I want to know if it's a AMD-JAVA problem. I doubt it is a minecraft one finally...
EDIT:
Actually this is a really tricky bug. It occurs on my 2 servers, both AMD. the server handle at least 20 players, without lag if there is no mob on. With 7 players on, my quad core CPU reaches 100% (java process) if i spawn animals WITH A SPAWN RATE OF 75 (means only 25% of them spawn). I tried couple of things like affinite core, tweak java run batch.. etc.
Got Pentium 4 Prozessor
And Laggs like hell (no fps)
lol, you couldn't expect more from a pentium 4. but you answered my question, it's not the processor's fault. Or maybe the pentium 4 isn't powerfull enough to run mobs?

My 3.0ghz p4 runs this like a dream, 50-60 fps in SMP on a good day, maybe 40 if i'm running another game too.
The problem occurs on my Intel Core i5 @ 4.0 GHz as well as my brother's Core2Quad at stock. I don't think it is an AMD problem. We both get very high FPS, but we get the weird latency/desync problems in SMP listed in the original post.
I'm having the same issue, even on SMP servers that I am hosting. Minecraft 1.4 lags on my Vista computer, but not on my XP; what computers are you experiencing lag on?
This is happening on my server sometimes I lag, but my friends barely get a chance to even collect two wood, and one of my friends keeps falling and rarely gets to move around. This is a problem in Minecraft SMP servers. They can perfectly play fine on single player, but I can't wait for the next update so we'll have to persuade Notch to fix this. Who agrees with this? Do you guys think we should do this? We need to have our SMP servers back!

ME TOO! Muy interesante. That's weird, my Vista lags, but the XP is fine....

Edit: I also kinda doubt that would relevant in any case, as your (no doubt far more entertaining) explosion test revealed XD
