Did a search and came up with this topic. I'm having a serious problem with lag in single player and it would seem a lot of others are as well. Minecraft was playing fine until a few days ago, and now the framerate drops to 1-2fps after a chunk load is triggered and/or playing for anywhere from 5-10 mins. It's happening irrespective of map size.
The game has become unplayable in its current state.
This is not an issue with my computer's hardware, and i have tested processor affinity, priorities, minimal graphics settings, and near render distance with absolutely no change in the issue stated above.
System specs:
Toshiba A200 Vista 32bit
standalone client
4gb ram
128mb Ati Radeon mobility 5700
1.66ghz intel centrino dualcore processor
Edit: a reinstall of Java seems to have corrected a large part of the problem. The game is lagging infrequently now. I would consider it normal. (the simplest solutions are the ones that work sometimes.)
Not sure if this is the right section, but a lot of topics concerning lag have been here, so this topic will try to adress all of them. Please Note: I have tested all of these on a laptop, and on servers that haven't lagged before the Beta 1.3 update. Don't even come in here and say: "it's server or client side." It's not. I also was using fast graphics, and normal render distance, getting 20 fps, so it's not the computer. Like I said, all of the servers and my computer was fine before Beta 1.3.
Facts:
1. This lag problem is for all servers, but may only affect some people.
2. This lag problem ISN'T caused by the server or the client.
3. It seems to be computer, not user, specific.
4. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.
This is all I got so far.
Dont know what to do bro >.<
Symptoms:
1. One minute or more of chat lag.
2. Everyone else is still, or people move choppily.
3. The whole world doesn't generate, and you can fall of the sides.
4. Other people aren't complaining about it on the server.
5. Can't place or destroy blocks within a minute.
6. You take damage about one minute after you preform said damage-taking action.
7. One minute or more of object lag. (workbench using, chest opening etc.)
8. It takes a long time to download the world from the server.
Most of the time, it's the chat lag combined with the world generation glitch.
Solutions:
None so far :tongue.gif:
Supposedly, it's RS torch related, but....
It's game-code related. No way to change that, though. Other than next update.
Post any info you may have about this problem, or any solutions! You may also post "I have this problem too" to show how many people it's affecting! Helpful Quotes:

I believe I found the problem lies in new chunk loading functions - the game works fast as long as you start it. But as long as you move (and that move triggers chunk loading, possibly triggers more than 1 chunk) the whole game slows to 1-2 FPS! Does not help quitting the world, the only way it to quit the game and start it again, which will not help for long!
After slowdown occurs it uses max CPU while memory or hard drive write/reads are unaffected (checked statistics with Process Explorer) therefore I assume one of things (related) occur, recursive function or infinite loop

Me too, except I play in SMP, and instead of fps lag, real lag lag. I cannot even move, teleport, mine, open chests or nothing and within a minute of nothing happening a crash.
My settings are:
Music - 0% Sound - 31%
Graphics - Fast
Render Distance - Short
Limit FPS - On
View Bobbing - Off
Smooth Lighting - Off
It's not the FPS I'm worried about because I live with it. But the lag is causing me to not play Minecraft because I only play SMP. And I never lagged before 1.3.

I have also had this problem since 1.3, my friends both have it as well. It doesn't matter who is hosting, everyone besides the host will get bad lag and desync (seeing things happen about 30 seconds to 2 minutes after they actually happen). We are all connected via Skype while playing and have no lag or latency in our conversation, but in-game our actions happen about a minute after we actually do them. We all played together for many hours without any problems before 1.3 was released.
Does anyone know if Notch is aware of this problem? It seems to be at least moderately widespread from what I have seen on these forums.

SMP Lag (Not FPS) [Running Mac 10.5.8]
I've probably posted this topic many many times. On some servers, my connection is fine. No lag, nothing. On other servers I log in normally and when I get to the actual world a couple chunks (about 5-30) load without a problem. Then it stops and loads the rest of the chunks slowly. My messages take up to 5 minutes to appear. I do not think this is an internet problem because as said before, some servers load quickly. Nobody else is affected but me.
Regardless if I make my video settings all on low, making my fps like 70, it won't change anything.
After a couple of minutes of sitting there, I am kicked off the server with the message:
internal exception:java.io.IOEXCEPTION: mark/reset not supported
P.S. I am on a 10.5.8 Leopard.

I've had this problem ever since the 1.3 update. I keep trying to log on every few days to see if Notch has fixed it, but so far no joy.
Interesting note: I can log on to my account and server from other computers without the glitches happening, even though one of them has horrible connection speed and the fps goes down the tubes.
Open -> Single Player -> Wait 30 seconds -> Lag? OK, start all over again.
Rinse and repeat until the lag is gone. If you crash in-game or something then GG, do it again.
It happens sometimes, sometimes not, as stated in the first post. For me it happens frequently, only 1/10 times does it actually not lag. Just wait for a new beta update or something, like everyone :/
Yup same problem here. Glad I found this post. I know its not the server b/c no one else on it has the problem
I also know its not me because heres the info from speedtest all the way to california (where the server i play on is located) http://www.speedtest.net/result/1228993229.png
Hope someone can fix this soon. I dont play single player at all.
I am getting a problem like this, but its only sometimes, mornings my time is usually fine but evenings are horrid, but then some evenings its fine, some mornings are bag. My ping is always fine for the servers (200-250) and its been happening before 1.3.
I have tried everything to do with my connection but as far as i can tell this isnt the issue at all as im not lagging in any other application.
Yes, same situation for me. Even after a complete wipe and restore of my desktop, it still experiences the same lag with 1.4 and my laptop still works.
Should also note that occasionally the game crashes out with a "internal exception: java.net.socketexception: connection reset" error just like before. And yes, I've uninstalled/reinstalled/updated Java.
I'm having this problem too, probably the most frustrating Minecraft-related thing ever.
Just started playing on this SMP server (searching for one with no fps lag) and everything was great for like 2-3 days. I did use one redstone torch and destroyed it before I started having this problem too: 20 second - 1 minute (plus, sometimes) stall after destroying a block before it's actually destroyed.
It is destroyed immediately. However, a second or 2 (sometimes more) later, it reappears (sometimes trapping me inside it), stalls there for multiple seconds, then disappears for good, dropping an item I can't pick up for an additional amount of time.
This is the most noticable thing for me. It also reacts this way when placing a block sometimes. But my character and those around me move relatively smoothly through the world, though once every X minutes everybody disappears (sometimes tp me back to some original spot), leaving me to believe I was "playing in the past" so to say.
I did notice the server added mobs when the problem really became noticable, but I also have the problem of Java using 93% CPU when loading the world and said process (javaw.exe) doesn't close when I close Minecraft.
Sounds like a universal problem experienced when on a server that stems from a multiplicity of problems on individual client computers as well as server hosts' computers. Where's the big red button to fix it?
Created an account just to throw my hat in the ring too. I've had this lag ever since 1.3 came out. Exact same symptoms the OP and others have described: chat takes minutes to show up, stationary or jerky players, world slow to load, falling through the infinite void or off the edge of the world, placed and mined blocks disappear/reappear/disappear, mined blocks don't drop anything, etc.
This issue only affects SMP (every server I've tried), but single player is fine. I'm on an aging laptop, and it limped along pretty well before the 1.3 update. But this lag has made it unplayable. I tried again today with the 1.4 update after having not played for months and still have the same issue. Extremely frustrating...
After contemplating reformatting from XP to 7 (been needing to) and wondering how to turn off integrated graphics (mentioned in another post), I checked the properties of the launcher.
For some reason, it was running with compatibility for Windows 95. I remember doing this a while back for some reason I can't remember, but unchecking the box to run for any certain compatibility was the undeniable fix. I no longer get the message saying javaw.exe is +93% CPU usage anymore either.
Though this fix isn't for everyone (unlike my apparent need of software knowledge), I think everyone should continue to post their own fixes, as I'm sure there are tons of different fixes that solve this same problem.
FIX #1 FOR MYSTERIOUS SMP LAG PROBLEM: - Disable "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 95" under Properties>Compatibility for the Minecraft launcher.

Has anyone sent this thread link to notch on Twitter?
Sweep the leg!!!
Don't think he uses Twitter for bug reports....
But I did anyway.

No solution yet guys...
