I just downloaded mincraft, and decided I wanted to change a few of the sound files.
I read the files were in the &appdata%/.minecraft\assets folder. I looked there but only saw 2 folders, indexes and objects, neither of which had any .ogg files. I searched all the other files in the entire minecraft folder and there was only 1 .ogg file called caves.
I uninstalled the game, and made sure all files were deleted and tried to reinstall them again, same thing.
I searched my entire C: drive for .ogg files and there were none other there. Yet the game plays all the sounds. So where are the files for sounds?
Thanks for the update, I will look for them and give it a try.
BTW: I dont have the virtual\legacy\ subfolder in the assets folder, there are only 2, indexes and objects. Is it possible to create them? The slamming for the door and chest is really annoying, and I just wanted to replace them. I dont want to change all the the sounds in the game.
If you want to make custom icons, music, records, or sounds, go back to the first minecraft folder that contains resourcepacks. Now open up the assets folder (this is a different one from the one you made). You should see folders labeled icons, music, records and sounds. Inside, you'll find the original files for each category. If you want to update an icon, just copy the one you want and then go back to the minecraft folder that you recently created.
I want to change the sound files, but my resouce folder is empty, and there is nothing in assets except the 2 files I mentioned. So I am now at a total loss.....
I will keep searching, but any information you can provide will be most welcome!!!
I did a lot of reading, and the minecraft site says:
f you want to make custom icons, music, records, or sounds, go back to the first minecraft folder that contains resourcepacks. I dont have the "other" assets folder with all the subfolders in it!! Where do I get that, do i need to download it and add it in??
Can really use some help here to make this all make sense.
Most information on this topic is obsolete. Mojang re-did the layout this week. The files under assets/objects are the various graphics and sound files. The data in the index directory identifies which file is which.
For example in the index/1.7.3.json file is this entry:
Which means that the file at objects/ae/aedeb53dd3315f964ff4d10d0003e4c5f41d1bb0 is the file that is 'virtually' at 'sounds/mob/enderdragon/hit1.ogg'
Note that the files are named as the md5hashes of the data and are stored in subdirectories by the first two characters of their hash. (to spread them out in multiple directories algorithmically)

Hi Gerbil,
Thank you for your update, but i really have no idea what to do with that information. Is there some kind of tutorial that shows how I can make changes to the files? How I can change a few of the sounds? The objects are just numbers, so I would have to look through all those folders just to find a particualr one? But what kind of changes would I need to make to it to change it?
I really wish they had left the original files, overwriting one file to change it would have been so much easier. I dont understand where the sound is coming from since there are no .ogg files, or the hash file seems to be too small to hold audio data.
I wish someone could explain this to me in a way that I can actually understand it!!
Please help, I would really like to make some changes - and the sounds of the door and chest hurt my ears since I use headphones. I have to lower the block sounds really low even though I like all the other block sounds.
They have an adage - "If it aint broke....." well, you know the rest. I think they took something that worked really well and really broke it!!
Please, any help in making this system clear would be much appreicated!
Some of those files really are ogg files. Others are icons. Some sounds are longer (music tracks), some are shorter (damage sounds). So the files there are all different sizes.
There's not really any way to just overwrite Minecraft's original files because every time you run the launcher it will update them with the proper file that has the correct hash.
My understanding of resource packs is that you can create one and modify as few as one file if you like. Your modifications are over laid upon the base files, so anything not in your resource pack will be the default sounds. So to replace two sounds you only need to create a resource pack with those two sounds in it.
There never was a way to change the sounds before resource packs. You had to mess with file permissions if you wanted to prevent Minecraft from automatically undoing any changes you might have made to the ogg files.
The game will always overwrite the files if they have been tampered with.
You must create a resource pack if you want to add or overwrite any of the current assets.
Hi Extreme,
If you read my posts you will see that :
"Please help, I would really like to make some changes - and the sounds of the door and chest hurt my ears since I use headphones. I have to lower the block sounds really low even though I like all the other block sounds."
The slaming sounds are grating my ears, I wanted to swap them for more softer sounds since I use them so much. Thats the main reason.

Ahh - I see. I tried to create a resource pack following the guidlines before, but it does not work, and you say they are obsolete. Is there an updated tutorial I can follow to do this?? I am sure there are many many people doing these - and I would like to be able to follow a tutorial that is updated for the most recent changes.
Also, I clicked on all the folders, there was not one .ogg file in any of them, only the hash files, unless the .ogg files are written into the hash files.
Can anyone point me to a tutorial that will work with the most recent changes?
I don't think that the resource pack format has changed. What has changed is how minecraft stores its own baseline versions of the files.
If you want to take a sound file from minecraft to edit or repurpose, then follow my post above about how to interpret the json file and find a particular sound file. You can then copy that file and rename it to something.ogg and put it in a resource pack in the proper position of the resource pack directory structure so that it gets used for what you want it to be used for.
Or just create a resource pack with whatever ogg file you want.
You cannot just swap out files and expect things to work, it dosen't.
I've explained to you that you CANNOT edit the files in .minecraft and expect things to change, it won't.
You must create a Resource Pack, and overwrite the said file you wish.
There is a file structure for resource packs that you can see here.
Hi Extreme,
I know all of that, you didnt read my posts. The problem is that gerbal said earlier "Most information on this topic is obsolete. Mojang re-did the layout this week. "
I had went ahead and followed the instructions, where were from the link you just provided (minecraft.gamepedia.com). I created a folder in the resourcepacks folder called ResourcePack1. (My resource pack that I am creating) Then I created the pack.mcmeta file using notepad, and added to that file the info provided in the tutorial (I Cut & Pasted and edited the folder name):
and removed the .txt at the end of the text file. I didnt bother with the pack.png since that seemed optional. Then I added a folder called assets in the ResourcePack1 folder I created, and added a folder in assets called minecraft.
The files I wanted to change are the chestclosed/open and door_open/closed files. according to the file list they are in the sub folders called sounds/random. So I creaded the sounds folder and the random folder inside sounds, and added the 4 .ogg files with the same file names on the list.
When I restarted the game, it was the same, so it is not workling. I did everything exactly as the tutorial there described. The problem is, in the tutorial link you provided it also says:
"If you want to make custom icons, music, records, or sounds, go back to the first minecraft folder that contains resourcepacks. Now open up the assets folder (this is a different one from the one you made). You should see folders labeled icons, music, records and sounds. These obviously dont exist anymore, so the tutorial in the minecraft.gamepedia.com is wrong.
What I have been asking all along is there a tutorial I can follow that will work with the new system? I can find anyting online that will allow me to build a correct resource pack since the last changes were made.
Does anyone know how to make and use resource packs with the latest changes? Or did i just do something wrong?
Please help! I am going toi start a new post on this. I am using up my posts until I have 5 approved posts.
The article on the wiki is fine, and the Resource Pack format has not been changed, not once.
Please provide the ZIP you are using for the Resource Pack, at somewhere like https://mega.co.nz .
Hmm - Zip?? hahah! Yes - I hav seen resource packs in zip and rar formats. I didnt zip it.... I guess I missed that, but I didnt see it mentioned in the instructions.
I will try that and see if it works.
Thanks!
Edit - I zipped it and tried it and still not working, here is the zipfile:
Oh - I see I put the ResoucePack1 folder in the zip - but went back and removed it so that the assets folder and the pack.ncdata file were in the root, but it still did not work.,,,

Extreme,
I put the zip file in my resources folder and it did not work. Do I need to unzip it?

I read somewhere that you needed Java SE to use the single player command. I was interested in giving that a try so I installed the Java. Could that cause a problem with the minecrat resources?
This is a fresh install of minecraft (I had already uninstalled and reinstalled it earlier).I cant imagine why it would work for you and not for me.
You have to do more than put it in the resource folder. You actually have to select a resource pack inside Minecraft and tell it you want to use it. Did you select the resource pack in Minecraft? (Options -> Resource packs)

Thank you!!!!!!!

How exactly do we get at the ogg files so we can listen to them or convert them to mp3 from here? I was hoping to get the new music they just added on my mp3 player but I don't know if this means I can't, or if it's just become harder to do so
Look in the json file and search for the "file" that you want, e.g. "sounds/music/game/piano3.ogg"
Identify the corresponding "hash", e.g. "9528b6a76e7bac64ca1145cc682e8a8448cc04e5"
Find this file at assets/objects/95/9528b6a76e7bac64ca1145cc682e8a8448cc04e5 <= note the first two characters define the directory
Copy this file to wherever.ogg e.g. Desktop/piano3.ogg and listen to it.
