I just got Minecraft (PC) a few hours ago, and I really don't know what I'm doing. This might be nothing, but when I put in the IP for a server, it just sits there saying (pinging), and (scanning for games on your local network). For ever. How do I get rid of it, so I can connect and play online?
The "Scanning for games on your local network" is for scanning your network for LAN based games. For the server ip issue, have you tried entering a different server ip?

How do I get it to search the internet? That might be what the problem is. And I did a good few server ip's i wanted to play in. Didn't work.
You have to add the server IP and/or port manually to connect to servers that are not on your local connection.
That's what I try to do. I type the IP address in and check to make sure that its correct. When I hit enter it pops up on the list, but it will keep saying 'pinging' and do nothing else. Even when I use direct connect, it will keep saying 'logging in' and nothing else. I'm at a lost.
Just checked that. Even with my firewall off its still doing the same thing. And my antivirus' web blocker is off. That's what I try to do. Well I don't really know what to tell you, sorry. I guess you can try making sure your Java versions are up to date. Which can be updated here.

Do you have some sort of firewall / antivirus / website blocker program that is activated?
