I have an issue which makes me get lagspikes occasinally when placing or breaking blocks. Using Optifine to bring up the lagmeter, I can tell that there are spikes when I place or break any block. With smooth lighting on it is very apparent. When having smooth lighting off it is hardly noticable.
I do not get these spikes everywhere, only on certain worlds and certain places in certain worlds. Well, I guess I do get them everywhere but they are more or less noticable depending on where I am.
I have tested using my mods, and without my mods. I have tested with allocating more RAM and less RAM. I cannot see a difference.
In a survival server I play on, there is certain spots in the world where I have dug/placed blocks where I feel these spikes. At other places I do not feel them.
There are certain maps on PvP server I play on, where most of the maps there is no real issue. There are some small spikes. But there is one map where I get a huge lagspike whenever I break or place any blocks. It is very less if I have smooth lighting off, but I can still feel it.
Having smooth lighting off I most of the time cannot feel any spikes at all.
I have searched for this issue, but not really found a solution or a reason why it happens.
I have some questions:
What causes this?
Is there a solution?
Have you had, or do you have this issue?
For the record, I run ArchLinux. I do not have that great computer, but it runs fine. I can play without issues most of the time, depending on what server I am on and how many players there are.
It's an older computer which I build a long time ago. I did find a bug filed: https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-5625
I assume it has something with thhe lighting to do though. I do not have the issue where it places several blocks, but I got the lagspike.
If you don't mind the lagspikes or if you don't mind not having smooth lighting, you can choose one of those options.
What are your computer specs, as lower specs may be the cause of the issue?
I would like Smooth Lighting, but I dislike having lagspikes.

Your processor is above minimum requirements but doesn't quite meet recommended. This might be your issue as, however unbelievable it may be, Minecraft is quite resource intensive.

Yeah, it probably is the reason. I can play other games fine, Minecraft is the one that has issues sometimes. I can stand a bit of low FPS, but not spikes.
Try OptiFine - it gets rid of Smooth Lighting-caused lag for me.
If you read the OP but did not understand, I do use Optifine. I always use it, unless in this case where I needed to test if it happened without any mods. Optifine does not solve the issue.
You say that "it gets rid of Smooth Lighting-caused lag for me. ", what type of lag? Lagspikes when placing/breaking blocks?

Time for a new PC when I manage to get to it...
