This is a very serious problem for me:
I have been running Minecraft for over a year now, and I have had no problems. Connecting to minecraft.net has never been an issue for me, and I force updates regularly. However, a new problem has presented itself to me just today:
Early this morning, I got on Minecraft, eager to try some new things. I ran MC once, and detected no problems, as none were apparent yet. However, when I clicked force update, I ran into a problem: When Minecraft was about 10% done downloading, it stopped, and said "Failed to launch" then "Fatal error occurred (4): null" as I said before, I had never seen this before. I then tried deleting the entire .minecraft folder, then just the bin, then minecraft.jar individually. Nothing has helped, and I always get the same error. Naturally, I got on the forums and searched around to find something. All of them said the same things. They mentioned firewall or antivirus programs blocking the download, though nothing has changed since yesterday (it worked fine yesterday). My antivirus has never blocked Minecraft before, and neither has my antivirus program, Microsoft Security Essentials. I have no problem connecting to minecraft.net; when Minecraft is fully downloaded, I connect to the Minecraft website fine, and it's not like minecraft.net is blocked or anything. But there is no way for me to re-download a clean .minecraft. Inside the small .minecraft folder that is downloaded, there is the "lastlogin" file, and the "bin" folder. Inside the "bin" folder is "md5s" and "version". But nothing works. And this is new! Nothing has changed on my computer!!!
Help!!!
Please don't post excessive amounts of stuff about firewall and antivirus crap. I have already said that nothing has changed since yesterday. This just randomly came up. This is also on both of my computer accounts; the admin account and the standard account (I am running Windows 7 Pro.).
Hi,
From looking around, try running Minecraft as administrator (right-click > Run as administrator). If this does not resolve, you can try removing the options.txt file in %appdata%\.minecraft, but providing a full crash report if possible is probably better to help resolve the issue if it persists.

Running as admin. did not work.
There is no options.txt in my .minecraft. Like I said, that did not download. only "lastlogin", and the "bin folder". The only files in the bin folder are "md5s", and "version" that's it.
How do you supply a full crash report? "Failed to launch" and then "Fatal error occured (4):" null is all that appears on the screen.
You need to temporarily unblock where the updates come from on your firewall.
Umm. What? I don't know much about firewall. Nothing could be blocked all of a sudden, on my firewall. It worked yesterday. I haven't messed with anything. When I forced an update today, this problem came up.
Any more ideas?
Edit: Help! The problem is persisting. I tried rebooting my computer, and it is still glitching! assets.minecraft.net is not blocked, so it's definitely not my firewall or antivirus, so I have no idea why this is happening!
Fatal error occurred (4): null is caused by a connection blockage by either antivirus or firewall, preventing the launcher from connecting to the login servers. Please note that antivirus programs are given regular updates to their database, and some of these updates will sometimes break or give false positives on certain processes on the computer.
The issue is most likely caused by either Avira or McAfee. Are you sure you do not have either of those installed? Please note that Microsoft Security Essentials is not a proper antivirus program.

Could my Microsoft security Essentials Program be blocking it? That is what I am currently using. I tried deleting my .minecraft folder, but that didn't work. Any other suggestions?

I just ran into this same problem today. Usually when I have these kinds of problems it's because of my K9 Web Protection. I tried telling K9 to always allow minecraft.net...didn't work. Tried to always allow assets.minecraft.net...didn't work. However, if you go to assets.minecraft.net by typing it into your address bar...it will take you to a page where at the top of the page it shows a website called s3.amazonaws.com. So I told K9 to always allow s3.amazonaws.com and it worked! Even if you don't have K9, I suggest that you tell whatever antivirus program you have to always allow s3.amazonaws.com. Also keep in mind, your antivirus may have never blocked minecraft before but like cestislife said these programs tend to update themselves which means your antivirus may very well block minecraft now. I hope this helps.

Yes, I'm sure I don't have Avira or McAfee. nor do I have AVG or Norton. Microsoft Security Essentials is the only anti-virus program that I have on my computer.
As for the the second statement, I've never heard that before, but that's not what I use to regularly scan my computer. For scans, I mainly use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which I'm pretty sure is a good program.
Also, like I said, everything worked fine yesterday, but today it's being weird, and the problem is persisting throughout the day. When I was done yesterday, I turned off the computer. How could my anti-virus programs receive updates if the computer wasn't on?
How do I configure what is blocked or not, probably for Microsoft Security Essentials. I really don't think Microsoft Security Essentials is the problem here, but still, it's worth a shot. I ruined my Feed The Beast modpacks as well, trying to fix this problem.

It's s3.amazonaws.com
I have this problem every time Minecraft has an update and know why. I temporarily unblock s3.amazonaws.com on the firewall and update then block it again.

I guess I'll look into that. I don't know why it would be blocked all of a sudden, but it's worth a shot. How do I unblock it?
Nope, s3.amazonaws.com is not blocked on my computer. I accessed it just fine. Still unsolved. I'm slowly dying an agonizing death! The problem is still persisting. I tried a bunch of things just to figure out what's causing this crap, and I still can't pin down this extremely frustrating issue! I know this is probably getting old, but I still need help.
Edit: No, I'm not getting anything new, if anyone thinks that's what it will take. Part of what's really bothering me is that it was working fine, and then all of a sudden, it wasn't.
Hold on; what exactly is the URL of the site that the .minecraft folder's contents are downloaded from? If I can attempt to access that website, than maybe I can pin down what's wrong. If it's blocked by something, then I'll just figure out how to unblock it. If I can access it fine, then something else weird is going on. So, does anyone know where .minecraft folder's contents are from? Or, if that doesn't make sense, just where do the Minecraft updates come from?

Oh, and by the way, it's not Microsoft Security Essentials; as it works fine on my school's computers, which all have Microsoft Security Essentials. Though it doesn't work my other computer which is rarely used, so, taking into account a few other facts, by process of elimination, it has to be some program that both computers have, and update without prompting the user. That leaves Microsoft Security Essentials, which I'm already pretty sure is not the problem, and K9 Web Protection, which doesn't really seem like the program to be blocking this stuff. If I could log in, I could check when the last update was, and if it was late on Saturday, or first thing on Sunday, then that would make sense, though this whole thing is confusing me....
Do you know anything about this program, and whether or not it's blocking it? I can't remove the program, but if I could get someone to test MC out with this program, and their problems were similar to mine, that would tell me whether or not it's K9.
I know it might be a bit of work, but I would really appreciate if someone would do this for me.

I had K9, and I followed these steps, and it unblocked it for me. Thanks!
Whenever I try to open and update minecraft, it gives me the Fatal Error (4): Null thingy. I have Avast Free Antivirus. I've tried everything posted on here plus everythin I can find on Youtube and nothing works! I just got accepted to a server I applied for and I would really like to play on it so if anyone can find a sulotion that would be awesome.
Go on your firewall and open a log, then try to update Minecraft. The log should show you the address that is being blocked. Make a temporary exception for that address (s3.amazonaws.com/<something, I don't know>, then update Minecraft. Once you have updated, remove the rule.
P.S. the '<something, I don't know>' in the address is not the real address, it is some stuff about Minecraft.

How do I open a log on my firewall? I don't usually delve into firewall business, so I'm not sure what to do.

Look up how to unblock IPs for your firewall on the internet (try to use official sites)
