I assume you are on Windows, you may have a problem with your hosts file, which overrides DNS queries. Please follow the following directions:
Hold down the Windows key, and press R. In the window that appears, type in %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc, and press Enter. In the window that appears you will see a file, "hosts". Open that file in Notepad, and copy the contents here.

Here as in on this post. I need to see the contents of your hosts file.
here they are: # Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.

The issue isn't with the hosts file for both of you. It would also be great if you could create your own topics for your own issues. It may be slightly different.
I tried downloading the Launcher.Pack.Lzma and putting it into the .minecraft folder which gets the launcher to start up fine and i can type my username and password in but the play button is greyed out and the choose version has nothing in it.
This is what the console says when trying to log in:
Trying to log in...
Logging in with username & password
Could not log in: Cannot contact authentication server
Couldn't get server status
java.net.SocketException: Connection reset
Please help... I've tried disabling my Antivirus and Firewall and to no avail, and tried the .bat file with -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true.
I am behind a proxy which may have something to do with it, but every launcher I have used before this one has worked fine (using a .bat file to point it through the proxy) and if anyone has another launcher that i can try that will download/login to the 1.6+ versions would be highly appreciated,
Thanks
Edit:Oh, and i tried %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc
when I try just to get in the launcher this happens

please help I have been waiting for this but not just to find out it does not work
I'm on a mac and have the same problem can some one help plezjust thought of this:couldn't one of you guys that got the new luncher to work just make a link to dowload the minecraft 1.6 .jar file
unless you also get the rest of the .minecraft folder with all the sound files and terrain data etc. it won't work with just the .jar. You can download the 1.6.1 Jar directly from http://s3.amazonaws....1.6.1/1.6.1.jar but it is nothing if the launcher wont let me log in or at least play offline... I'll try and download the launcher again seeing as 1.6.1 was released today.
Edit: Still doesn't work... even putting the 1.6.1.jar into the 'versions' folder won't work... lets hope bukkit takes their time updating so we can still go on multiplayer for a while longer
Edit x2: Oh and i failed to mention I'm on windows 7 with Java 7 update 25, also i submitted a bug report at https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MCL-744 if you guys want to watch it

I've restarted but the same thing happens. Anyone else?

I'm also getting this error:

Your problem is not with the hosts file. Please perform a DNS flush.
This did not work either.I tried and relaunching the game leads to the same problem.
