I'm trying to play over LAN with my siblings, and it has worked previously, but now it doesn't for some reason.. I tried contacting netgear support thinking it was a router problem, but they wanted to make me pay $40 just for them to look at it, which is crap.. I have a netgear wnr2000v3 router, I'm using minecraft 1.5.1, and all I want to do is play over LAN. The lan world doesn't show up on the other computers when I click open to LAN, but it does say on the hosting computer "lan world hosted on 184,33.0. or some number, which I tried to manually type in and connect to on the other computers only for it to say "connection timeout or connection refused: cannot connect to server. Please help I'm so frustrated..
I completely disabled all firewalls and antivirus programs, and still no luck
and if it helps feed the beast LAN didn't work either
actually, I tried hosting the LAN world on another computer (comp 2) and it worked for computer number 3 but not number 1 which I tried to host it on originally, comp. 1 can't connect at all
which is weird since computer 1 has been the one hosting the world for the past few months.. I haven't changed any settings or anything on it..

Trying restarting (turn off then on) your router. Exit the Minecraft.exe file, then open it again. Make sure you are connected to the same network (local wifi). This should fix the problem.

I've had this problem for months and it hasn't been fixed so I'm guessing it's my computer's problem. I have no idea wtf to do because just like you I used to host and play no problem.
Been having this problem recently as well; we did fine playing on LAN until about two months ago. Have tried every suggestion already in this thread, but nothing changes.
When I go to host the game, or my husband does, we click the "open to LAN" button, and get a message that the game is hosted on o.o.o.o:(four digit port number). Then, the other one cannot connect. For some reason, Minecraft is not reading our IP settings, and we really don't know why.
Here's hoping it gets fixed soon 'cause I know it's not our machines or our router - we've tried everything suggested, and it still isn't working right.
I FOUND A SOLUTION! (on windows) This isn't a fix, it's just a workaround.
press start, go to RUN, type cmd.
Enter the command ipconfig
look at the IPv4 address. Write it down or something, because this is the IP that other players will use. Example: "IPv4 Address: 192.168.53.123"
Open your world to LAN and look at the stuff after "Local game hosted on 0.0.0.0". There should be a colon ( : ) then a number. Example: "Local game hosted on 0.0.0.0:12345"
Tell your friends to direct connect to the IP followed by the stuff after "0.0.0.0". Example: "192.168.53.123:12345"
Hoped this helped, and sorry for any grammar or capitalization errors; I was rushing.

That doesn't work because i've tried it and it sometimes works and other times doesn't

PIXELMON IS AWESOME & SO IS MINECRAFT & DIVINE RPG
My friend and I have tried probably almost everything out there, and even when we have tried some of the stuff you guys said, we still get the other stuff, like, "Connection timed out," or whateves.
We really want to do this, not many of our friends have Minecraft, so it would be a miricale if we could play together...
I have several computers that all worked with the 'Open to LAN' feature seamlessly. Then, by router bricked on my one weekend and I purchased a new Netgear router to replace it. Everything works great, except the 'Open to LAN' feature.
The only computer that can open to LAN is my largest one. It is set to have a fixed address of 192.168.1.150 on my local network, but the others are all connected via DHCP. For this reason, I suspect it has something to do with the settings on my router and that it has something also to do with the dynamic addressing.
It is possible the Minecraft introduced a bug just as I replaced my router, but it seems more likely that the problem is somewhere in my router settings.

I have this problem too. Two pc's, one desktop, one laptop. both on wi-fi. Does wi-fi make a difference? I have had it fixed by connecting both to router via lan wire, but wireless is easier if I can make it work!
I found a solution if no one ever found out why, (atleast for me) The firewall blocks the program. you need to go into your firewall and allow any and All "java(TM) Platform SE Binary", and make sure that they all are checked for private and public.
(not sure about public but i checked mine anyways)
same problem, i've had it for about 6months + no one seems to be able to fix it for me at least i have tried everything recommended and more, its done it to me over 3 different machines, it used to work for me then suddenly stopped working, not changed any router settings since it worked, other then to try and fix it and when nothing worked reverted it back, getting really angry that i paid 30$ for a game i can't play with my friends and no one seems to be able to fix it
here's a link to my dxdiag and any other information that might be helpful
using wired connections, tried wifi as well though, gives me a java connection refused exception error or a timed out error, i have port forward the minecraft ports causei used to run a server fine about a year ago but that won't even work now gives java errors for ppl trying to connect to that....i havew disabled all firewalls and anti-virus on all machines in the hope it might fix it to no avail... i really wish mojang and or the minecraft devs would try and address this issue in a patch or something as from what i see there as a TON of ppl having these issues.....anyways here's hoping someone can fix it

(fyi we are using a modded)
It has worked before using the same mods that we are using now.

Any ideas?
Is everything WiFi or are some computers wired?
