I know it's bad form to not make a new topic but I'd like to chime in and say that this is also happening to me. (So if anyone comes up with a fix I'd love to see it)
I connect to a server and get a few lines of chat then it's like all data from the server stops, then you get the timeout error.
I staff on a server network running a few servers and one of them never seems to have the issue and the others all have the issue. (I'm looking into if there's any differences with the server software on these and will post if I have win)
Every other minecraft server I've tried joining seems to have the issue after varying degrees of time.
Here's the steps I have so far taken to try and resolve the issue. (None have been successful)
Reinstall java 32 bit
Reinstall minecraft
Disable windows firewall
Disable antivirus shields
Disable router firewall
Remove java with javaRa and some other program that are supposed to do a more thorough uninstall (and reinstall)
Clear java cache
Install 32 and 64 bit java in varying orders
Changing the receive and transmit buffer values as mentioned in this thread
Reinstall windows - (somehow still didn't fix it)
It works fine on my partners computer on the same network. My thought is perhaps there is a java setting that somehow got selected or is the default in a new install that most servers do not like.
If there's any questions I can answer or any solutions I can try for help get this one resolved I will do what i can.
Thanks.

Thought I'd update this with a little more info.
The server that seems to work for me is a lobby server so there's barely anyone on there.
Here's a wireshark capture of network traffic between my computer and the server for the duration of connecting and the read timeout. https://dl.dropboxus...nication.pcapng
My issue is now fixed,
Seems to have been caused by a firmware update on my bob lite 2.
Since you're with iinet might be worth checking with a spare or friends modem/router before you replace your nic.

Can you please expand on this? You're right, I am with iiNet and I do have a BoB Lite router. How do you get this firmware update?
BTW, I have bought the new NIC and it doesn't change anything, at all.
EDIT: Okay so I've now updated my firmware for my router, still nothing.
This error is the bane of my life, nothing seems to fix it.
=/
So pre this issue i was having some internet dropouts and after extensive troubleshooting one of the steps iinet recommended it take was to upgrade the firmware on my bob lite. (I think it was the 1500 firmware, I upgraded to the 1518) http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/iinet/firmware/BoBLite/
After updating the firmware I started having this error with minecraft however a different computer on the network was able to connect fine and i was able to connect to other internet services without issues.
You can't revert a firmware update. After all my troubleshooting I was pretty stumped knowing it was a network issue but another computer worked fine.
I decided to buy another cheap router to test it out anyway and all my issues stopped as soon as I switched over.
tldr:
For me it was the BoB lite router causing the issue, try replacing that.

I think you're right. I just upgraded to the latest firmware and now none of the wireless devices in my house (laptops, iPad, etc) can connect to the router. I tried connecting the ethernet cable to one of the laptops, and it gets the error. It has something to do with the wired connection from my router.
It's worth noting that upgrading the firmware will reset the router back to factory settings.
So for wireless devices you'll need to recreate the wireless network they were connecting to.
Should work if you use the same ssid and password.

I HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM
I don't want to get too confident yet but I am 98% sure I have fixed it. Turns out you actually can "downgrade" router firmware. I simply downgraded from the 1518 firmware to the previous firmare (1500). I now don't have any issues! Thanks to everyone who tried to help me and thanks spudsrus for sparking this idea!
Might i ask, how did you downgrade the firmware? I was told by an iinet tech that it wasn't possible which is why I went out and bought another router. Decidedly more grumpy with them if it is possible.

I assume you know this but I'll go from the start anyway.
Type 10.1.1.1 in your address bar.
Enter your password (admin by default)
Go to the Handy Tools tab (second from right)
Click 'continue' next to where it says firmware update
Click this link: https://iihelp.iinet.net.au/support/Router_Firmware?type=hardware
Now click 'previous firmware' next to your router.
I just downloaded the one just before the latest one.
Then you just go back to the firmware upgrade page and upload the version you downloaded.
Why does everything on here have to sound so dang complicated? All I know is the render distance box told me I have 32-bit java, but I have no idea what that means. This laptop has always been kind of irritating, especially since this was bought for me because "it works good with games"; or "it's designed to work well with games". You can't listen to any of them knuckleheads, you have to do all the research yourself. Fire all of them gurus. It's their job to understand these complex computer things. My dad said I was smart with computers compared to him.
On multiplayer my connections been horrible lately. No connection on half of the servers, one bar on the rest. Sometimes two. One bar means it's like a ghost town full of the shadows of what was, like he said. Two bars means it's playable for 10 minutes. No wonder other players feel overwhelmed and frustrated when they try to figure out these problems. I mean, I've looked into some Minecraft coding and java coding, I took a couple computer classes, but it doesn't seem to help me here. Bagh, I'm just going for a dip in the pool - after I... read back over some of this...
What, are you people 27-year-olds with some computer training on your plates, or have you just been working with things like this for a few years?
Reinstall java 32 bit
Reinstall minecraft
Disable windows firewall
Disable antivirus shields
Disable router firewall
Remove java with javaRa and some other program that are supposed to do a more thorough uninstall (and reinstall)
Clear java cache
Install 32 and 64 bit java in varying orders
Changing the receive and transmit buffer values as mentioned in this thread
Reinstall windows - (somehow still didn't fix it)
I don't know how to do most of these, but... Should I start with a few of these?

I'm so sorry for taking up your space. The computer is a bit slow, but... for months I've wondered why the connection has been so bad, I kept my phone out of the room and moved some furniture to set the laptop next to the window and everything. I just moved it to another room for something and I went from one bar to four out of five. Wow. I don't know why that is. Although there is still lag. EDIT: Actually, instead of disconnecting, it just freezes.
-Wait a minute!- Some of the things mentioned here sound like they could be useful; anything here you think would be convenient to know? Just a quick tip - somewhere I should go to research for future more complicated problems? What area of study is this?
Now here is my problem-i Was in texas less than a few days ago and i was on a raid server on my step-moms internet, then i flew Back to LA and now i am on my moms Internet, and now i get the error that everyone eyles has here. Now my brothers is using his win8 and and he is not affected by this error.
-I tired multiple launchers and versions of minecraft
-I tried logging onto countless servers with a good internet connection
-I tried re-installing the java version listed on this forum
-I tried rebooting
-I tried disabling hamachi
-I tested my ping and got a B
ok, the new update for the server is what causes this. the only people who can fix it is the people who wrote the update. so now everyone has to just sit back with their thumbs up their butt till they find the problem. this is happening to too many servers and no answers that work. please stop give'n advise to people unless you know it works cause your just ing them off. just wait till the next update is my answer to the problem. Trust me NOTHING fixes it that has been posted soo far so dont do it.

Just editing in an update for this.

The server that seems to work for me is a lobby server so there's barely anyone on there.
Here's a wireshark capture of network traffic between my computer and the server for the duration of connecting and the read timeout. https://dl.dropboxus...nication.pcapng
Seems to have been caused by a firmware update on my bob lite 2.
Since you're with iinet might be worth checking with a spare or friends modem/router before you replace your nic.
=]
Can you please expand on this? You're right, I am with iiNet and I do have a BoB Lite router. How do you get this firmware update?
BTW, I have bought the new NIC and it doesn't change anything, at all.
EDIT: Okay so I've now updated my firmware for my router, still nothing.
This error is the bane of my life, nothing seems to fix it.
So for wireless devices you'll need to recreate the wireless network they were connecting to.
Should work if you use the same ssid and password.
So I'm on my laptop and I click on the network, then click connect. It tries to connect then says "Windows was unable to connect to <network name>
Thanks though, I'll just lodge an RA with iinet and get them to take the bob back. =]
Good to hear, no worries
-I tired multiple launchers and versions of minecraft
-I tried logging onto countless servers with a good internet connection
-I tried re-installing the java version listed on this forum
-I tried rebooting
-I tried disabling hamachi
-I tested my ping and got a B
No positives results no matter what i can do
