I just installed Java 7 update 15 and the minecraft loader tells me it needs JRE 1.5 and then sends me to the Java download page.. I have verified my Java is indeed functioning properly. I have also redownloaded the minecraft.exe from Mojang with no change.
I could potentially go back to the older version if this new one is indeed the problem, but I am hesitant to do so as I have been waiting for this update for some time due to some pretty nasty security vulnerabilities in update 13.
Has anyone else out there had this same problem, or alternately had success running minecraft on Java 7 u15?

You're quite mistaken, the vulnerability is patched in update 13. It is also only a threat if you use Java in the browser, which I hope that is not how you are playing Minecraft with. The standalone launcher is free from such exploits.

Thanks for your reply, regardless I would rather not have to run an "old" version of java. Are you able to verify whether minecraft works for you or not with update 15?
I have also tried running the launcher with Java from a command line and I get:
"Error: Could not open '../Java/jre7/lib/amd64/jvm.cfg'"
Perhaps I was confusing.. I have updated to update 15 and it doesn't work.. In the process now of installing 13 and keeping it around just to run minecraft with if it works.
Ok, I have verified that the new Java 7 update 15 does indeed break minecraft.
When I execute the minecraft loader with a command line pointing to Java 7 update 13 everything works fine.. However, doing the same with update 15 results in the following error:
Error: Could not open '../Java/jre7/lib/amd64/jvm.cfg'
When looking at the directory tree for update 15, it is immediately obvious there is no AMD64 folder, whereas there is in the update 13 installation.
I can help walk anyone trough a multiple java version install if they are having similar problems.
I don't get it! I've had this problem for a month and I still haven't figured it out! I'm having the EXACT same problem as the guy who made this thread. Re-downloaded several times, both 64-bit and 32-bit versions and I Minecraft still insists that I need jre 1.5.0. Well duh, i don't have 1.5.0, because there's a newer update! Heck, I just updated to jre7u17 and it STILL isn't working. Even went as far as going into the java folder and changing folder names to match that of the directory required with still no results. Any help would be much appreciated, I miss playing Minecraft :'(

have you tried uninstalling all versions of java you have first? having multiple versions isnt a good idea. in some cases if you need multiple versions for some reason you would need a launch command to dictate which version you want mc to use.

I have done a clean wipe of java from my pc several times. I have no need for multiple versions on my pc since java is backwards compatible with older versions. Minecraft still says I need jre 1.5.0 regardless of whether I have java - any version - installed or not.
Okay so this is interesting. I am able to get the technic launcher working and all the modpacks but not the regular minecraft launcher. dafuq? I've tried downloading a fresh vanilla launcher with no luck. I'm so hopelessly confused...
I seem to have a problem too. There's this one mod that I really want to play for Minecraft but it runs on java 7 and for some reason whenever I try to play Minecraft with the mod installed the game crashes. I've had the maker of the mod look at the crash log and the mod isn't the problem. Minecraft for some reason reverts back to Java version 1.6.0_51 even though I have 1.7.0_25 installed. I'm on a Mac by the way.
I need halp PLEASE I DONT GET IT. I downloaded the latest java from the java website, i went on mine craft, it still said i had 1.6! I reinstalled the download for the latest java, shut my computer down, did almost anything i could think of to get the latest java on my mine craft, and it still won't load as the latest! PLEASE HALP ME!!!
ok i have not been able to play minecraft for a long time like 2-3 months and i am getting really bored. The reason why it is messed up is because well i looked at my google chrome and it wasnt updating and i read online that i should update java so i did to the ,latest version, didnt work and so i stopped caring then i decided to play minecraft now it says this

although it did say it needs java runtime environment 1.7.0 ( it think) i just downloaded minecraft and this came up instead of JRE.
Update: nvm i fixed it i just clicked the link that says downloading: blah blah blah. Then downloaded it then drag the file to my %appdata% .minecraft folder, man i cant believe i didnt see that before.
You never fixed the original problem. There's something wrong with your java installation, so Java cannot make SSL connections. It uses this to download certain files, and to log in. You worked around the download, but you can't work around the log in.

Thank you very much! That's what I needed. Reinstalling didn't work the first time, but I managed to get it right.. Thanks again.

Uninstall Java completely and then re-install.
