I wouldn't upgrade to Windows 8 if you have fairly dated GPU. A lot of older devices don't have proper driver support for windows 8 and it can be complicated to trick Windows 8 into using a Win7 driver.

I bought my laptop (Toshiba Satellite L300) in Feb 2008. That makes it almost 5 years old. Windows 8 works perfectly fine on it. (GPU is a Intel Mobile 4 Series Express Chipset).
As for driver installation, Unless a Driver has instructions specifically for Windows 8, running the installer for the Driver package will install the win7 driver. There is no special trick, though oddly some drivers have install information for Windows 6.2 (Windows 8) and often are commented out as ";; not supported". Since the driver packages were made before Windows 8 was even in Beta, this is a bit presumptious. You can remove the data from the INF file and get such drivers installed. They are, however, the exception, rather than the rule.
Regarding DirectX: Minecraft doesn't use it; it uses OpenGL. This is often the issue, since usually the drivers supplied with the OS will have broken or simply unusable OpenGL support. (None of the MS certifications check OpenGL support). Installing the Windows 7 (or Win8, if available) driver will generally fix that. And of course, as noted you will need Java installed.

Since this is the minecraft forum and I assume the OP is talking about running minecraft on Win8 then my advice should be taken as such. Thus the latter part of your comment as quoted above parallels what I stated.
Windows 8 64bit here. Minecraft hasn't had any issues here, so yeah its got to be something with your setup. Only thing I could suggest is to make sure your drivers and java are up to date and maybe try running with administrator rights.
It is compatible. When I installed 8, all I had to do is delete Minecraft completely, update Java and then download Minecraft again.
Oh, and everyone who says Windows 8 sucks, please try something out before you pull your conclusion. It runs incredibly smooth and is totaly usable with non-touch screen devices. I'd say it's better than 7. It's definitely not the 'next Vista'.
As a programmer, I have bad news for you: Windows 7 is better. Windows 8 may run "smooth", but in the insides, 7 is much better. And I'm not talking about compatibility. And there are some other issues related to freedom on software use, that Notch is involved. Notch is threatening Microsoft to make Microsoft not run on Windows 8, because of those issues. Notch wrote an article on his blog, so you can go read it there.
Btw, I have 5 free Windows 8 keys, because of my college, so I'm not talking because I don't have it.

if im not mistaken markus never threatened microsoft and if he did they could care less.
@op yes minecraft should work for windows 8 as not that much was changed to be honest. i personally do not like windows 8. i did several beta tests through the periods in which they were available and it was really a put off. i mainly did not enjoy the features that resemble those of the windows powered tablets and other devices,
as other users said just delete minecraft, update java and redownload minecraft. if that does not work send a support ticket to minecraft.

Explain. otherwise I will be forced to conclude that you have no idea what you are talking about. I'd conclude that now, but I want to see the misconceptions leading to your declaration.

Not really, no. Notch, like Valve, apparently reach conclusions before they have all the facts. The Windows 8 Store will allow- and even encourage, the development of Open Source products and their presence- for free- on the store. Microsoft is actually providing non-financial assistance to VLC to get it on the Windows 8 Store (technical information, hardware, software licenses, etc).
Notch is threatening Microsoft to make Microsoft not run on Windows 8
Minecraft, actually. If he was to forcibly make it so Minecraft didn't run on Win8, he'd have quite a lot of angry customers. That's more like an FSF decision- "You are free to choose to run whatever software you like, as long as we say it's OK", or, more brief, "Freedom, the way we tell you".
because of those issues. Notch wrote an article on his blog, so you can go read it there.
I believe the blog post was prompted by MS asking if they could help get it win8 certified; This is funny because Minecraft would never even be able to get Win7 certified. Most of the points he makes are based on incomplete information and a complete misunderstanding of how the Windows Store actually works, pretty much the same as a good portion of the so-called articles on the subject of win8.
Btw, I have 5 free Windows 8 keys, because of my college, so I'm not talking because I don't have it.
Since English is not my primary language, I don't know many technical words to describe why getting Windows 8 is a bad thing. It's not that Windows 8 is utter s***, but the problem is that doesn't actually improve from Windows 7. It is great for Tablets, but not worth it for PCs. Yes, it is mainstream to say that, but just because it is mainstream, it doesn't mean that it is not correct.
This article pretty much states why Windows 8 is not a big deal. Even though the guy is beeing a bit harsh (comparing Windows 8 to the first Windowses (lol), it makes a lot of sense.
Any error messages
Hey everyone, I'm back!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
Because unless it is a directX/hardware issue it should work
