I downgraded to Alpha mainly to try it. I have lost interest in it due to lack of useful things in there. Though I did come across this one world with an arch and a natural column. I fell in love with it afterwards.
I've now came to a problem. The weird layout on how worlds are saved in Alpha Version 1.2.6 makes it hard to transfer to newer updates like 1.2.5 or 1.4.4. Does anyone out know how to transfer these alpha worlds into the newer versions of Minecraft, if it is even possible at all? All help is appreciated.
Just in case anyone needs to know the layouts of each.

Why aren’t my conversations peppered with spontaneous witticisms? Why don’t my friends demonstrate heartfelt concern for my well-being when I have problems?… I gotta get my life some writers." ~Calvin, Calvin and Hobbes
MC versions all support upgrading the previous format to the current format.
So, you need to run a version of MC that used McRegion format, open, convert and save that world to McRegion format.
Then any of the recent versions can open the McRegion format to convert it to Anvil format.
There is no going back so you might want to make copies of your world that preserve it in each format.
To save you the trouble of looking it up, McRegion was introduced in beta 1.3, and used until (according to this thread) 1.2. So you'll need to use a version of Minecraft that's somewhere between these two.
To downgrade to one of these versions, use MCNostalgia.
I just successfully downgraded to beta 1.3 using MCNostalgia, and used this to convert my beta 1.2.2 map to McRegion. I haven't yet made the next hop to Anvil, but it seems like it'll work.
