I would normaly play minecraft all day long with out any troubles when it was 1.3.2. I would usualy play on normal render disctance and without optifine and not a single problem. I even played on far without optifine and it was barely noticable lag spikes. Minecraft updates to 1.4.2 and BAM! L-A-G S-P-I-K-E-S!!!
i tried optifine and that didnt help worth a crap... I am using a cunstom built PC with AMD Athlon MMX, 1.1Ghz processer, 1Gb of RAM and Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT graphics card with 256MB of memory.
I know my PC isnt very good but it makes no sense why it would run perfectly before the update and then lag as if the processer turned into malassis....
I've noticed this too. I've tried a load of performance increasing things back when 1.3.2 was around and I got over 30 FPS, which wasn't bad. Then when I play vanilla 1.4.2, it shoots down to under 30. I tried optifine the other day but it didn't help at all since one of the FPS increasing options was replaced by something that decreases LAN lag for single-CPU core computers. Multi-core loading was fudged up too because of that option replacement.
I don't know why, but minecraft seems to get laggier every update. I downgraded to one of the alpha updates once and I got over 40 FPS, nothing helping, just clean, vanilla 40 FPS. Doesn't make any sense really.
To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
I have less than a 1G of RAM and I need optifine and a reduced memory Minecraft and it had worked fine before 1.4.2 with some lag spikes, now the bats are useless mobs that use up memory and causing my laptop to lag bad. Nothing I can do about it. Try optifine. I couldn't hit 10 fps without it after the update, now I hit 25-40 which is good for me, it might help you too

I am a mod on a few servers in Minecraft. If you see me in a server, be sure to say hi

did you even read what i said? optifine doesnt help! and yes the bats are useless mobs
i have changed all the video settings to there lowest as for better performance. i also completely deleted my .minecraft ad reinstalled everything, it seems to have helped a little bit
I have always had lag in minecraft but now after 1.4 BOOM. The lag is so bad Minecraft is no longer fun and is almost unplayable. Optifine never helped me in my life and I had to do turn down my render distance which I really hate to do. Wish Mojang would focus more on performance.
99.72% Of people get the same issue as yourself, OP - Myself even.
The other -1% are in denial.
Watch below.
Anyways, what I found helpful is lowering my rendering distance and changing my graphics from fancy to fast.
It helps, but nothing too noticeable.
Best of luck - Hope for a fix in the near future.
Just tested it in game, on my 1.3.2 Spoutcraft 58-70 FPS
On my 1.4.2 58-90 FPS
Did a 5 minute walk around, only during heavy rendering did it drop below any of these values, dont be a jerk about it, we are not in denial, some of us just dont have these problems.

To all people complaining about 'lag'. First of all, you're not experiencing lag, you're experiencing frame drops/frame rate issues. Lag is to do with latency, which you're not experiencing.
Second of all, maybe posting your computers specs would help?...
- First of all, what we are experiencing is called "Client Lag" or, yes, framerate drops. That's not the point though.
Before 1.4.x I was getting a constant 130 fps WITHOUT Optifine AND far render distance on. Now, i'm getting anywhere from 25 - 90 fps WITH Optifine and short render distance... - it's really getting to me lately...
I have 6 gigs of RAM allocated to Java x64 and 3 gigs dedicated to Minecraft itself...i'm not sure if doing both of them helps anything...
I have a...
GeForce 540M GPU
8 GB of RAM
i5 Processor
So it's most definitely not my computer.
If anyone has any fixes for this or any info on when Jeb is going to actually do something about it, let me know...
Until then, I guess i'll just have to keep an eye for pre-releases.

EDIT: Yes Im using the word lag deal with it -.-
That's interesting that turning the sound down makes your game run faster.
I tried it on my client with no improvement :/
Does anyone have an AMD GPU to confirm that this is not an Nvidia problem?
It ran the same exact speed just minus the lag spikes... Im using an Nvideo GeForce 610 graphics card so maybe it is unique to Nvidia
EDIT: Apparently its a problem caused by single core CPU's
EDIT 2: I just encountered another lag spike... They are less frequent but they're not entirely gone
I'm still unsure of what the problem is, It can't be java, cause I installed it yesterday...
It's not my .jar...cause I just reinstalled Minecraft...
I think we will just have to wait for Jeb to fix it..
Woe is me.

I dont see a problem with that computer
Processor: AMD Athlon, MMX, 3DNOW, ~1.1ghz
Ram: 1GB
Hard drive: 150GB
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT
theres my system specs, i know the ram could use an upgrade and maybe the processor is a bit old/slow
