Since you said it's not your keyboard's fault, then I will make the assumption that your actual keys are NOT getting stuck.
That said:
Are you experiencing gameplay lag or any 'rubberbanding' issues where you might walk forward or walk backwards (let's say you walk backwards away from lava) only to have your direction suddenly reversed on you? (for example, if you were walking backwards away FROM lava, you suddenly find yourself walking towards it even though you walked backwards)
I know that when/if I experience lagging issues, my avatar will sometimes walk in one direction, but then I get 'rubberbanded/pulled back' to where I was earlier. When walking away from things like... Creepers and lava, this can become quite a hazard.
One thing to try to absolutely double check to make sure that it isn't your keyboard is to reconfigure your keyboard settings for Minecraft so that the new directional movement keys aren't duplicating your current directional movement settings.
I have a literal sticky key on my keyboard and it was the A button and where I don't notice any problems when normally typing, in Minecraft, I kept experiencing issues where I was getting slightly veered off to one side (the left) even though I wasn't pressing the button anymore.
Are you playing singleplayer or multiplayer? If you're on a multiplayer server you could be getting server-related lag that is affecting the updating of your movement. Is there a noticable delay between when you release a key and when you stop moving in a direction, or do you end up moving in the opposite direction instead of coming to a stop?
Also, how many frames per second are you getting in your game?

there is a delay from when i stop pressing a key and when i stop, and if i press any other keys to move then before i stop i move in that direction and stop. if that makes any sense.
my fps is usually somewhere between 15 - 20 but sometimes it dips below 10.

also i am using optifine with the smooth input option on and it doesnt do anything.
Your FPS might be the issue. Low FPS can indicate that Minecraft is struggling, and this often leads to delayed input.

Previously, I was finding that even though the key I was using has long stopped its signal, I would continue to move in that direction. I would simply press down the key again and all would be fine and dandy.
If you're still experiencing this issue, remapping your directional keyboard controls might actually eliminate the need to press that 'sticking' key again.
I had the same thing happening; I would tap A and my avatar would walk left... but then would kind of keep on inching towards the left even though I had stopped moving. Remapping the directional controls to use E (straight ahead), D (backwards), S (left), and F (right) and R (Inventory) completely resolved that issue for me.

Definitely.
The lag (and between 8-10 fps is definitely noticeable lag - manageable but noticeable) can definitely cause rubberbanding-like actions and also aggravate any/all keyboard quirks as well if there is any issue with keyboard buttons wanting to keep sending signals even though they aren't being depressed anymore.
Hey, I just fixed mine today. What you need to do is make sure you don't have any spyware, specifically keyloggers or keystroke recorders in your system. THEN, you need to download AND INSTALL a newer version of LWJGL. Minecraft doesn't download with the updated versions. I used the 2.8.0 version, and all works great now.
BTW, I have Windows XP Home 32 bit and 1 gig of RAM. (and YES, MC runs great!)
EDIT- And no matter what anyone tells you, IT'S NOT YOUR KEYBOARD'S FAULT!!!

It may also be that if you're running from a browser like Firefox, there is a new update that kills performance, called Plugin Manager or something like that. You can uninstall it or just kill the process with task manager (with windows).
Well, shoot. It worked fine for my first launch, but after that, it stopped and was sticking again. It's probably the LWJGL, because that is the utility that Mojang uses to help the input, sound, and music. Just keep trying different versions of LWJGL until it works.

the stuck key bug happens in both smp and ssp, but it happens less on a private server i play on with my friend probably because its less laggy.
