Without more information about why MC might need more than the default memory, I have to assume that it doesn't and that you are experiencing a memory leak in a driver.
Figure out which video card you have, go to the amd.com or nvidia.com as appropriate, and install the latest video driver.
Ummm... Your adding ram solution worked. But I have a custom client, which says initial MB and max MB. If I have 8 GB ram and 1 TB memory, what do I put in?
If it was already at 1024 MB, you might put in 1536, or 2048 MB. Normally it should have 1GB (1024MB) of memory allocated, but sometimes it'll need more.
Also, when it talks about memory, it means RAM, not your hard drive (Or SSD.)
1536 MB = 1.5 GB
2048 MB = 2GB
I've dealt with this issue before, and the easiest way that I found was actually a mod out there, but that doesn't seem to work for everyone.
Help!!!
How to do it:

There is an option in the command line to allocate memory, but I imagine a google search might turn up instructions how to do it.
