I bit the bullet and bought Minecraft for my PC just now. I downloaded the .EXE file, ran it, and the minecraft Laucher opens, but just hangs. I can see MC logo, the text fields for logging in, etc, but I cannot click in the text fields to enter my user details.
I updated Java from 6 to 7, and nothing has changed.
I downloaded the Advanced Minecraft Error Test .BAT file, and it opens the Launcher for me, but then it all hangs.
Some files and a folder (with many sub-folders) are created, but none appear to be logs. What files might I be looking for in particular. The closest thing I have that might be a log file is server.log. This might have been created when I ran the server version of MC out of frustration.

Hi guys. I got the scheduled update for my graphics card and installed it. Still the same results for Minecraft. So I manually went to the AMD site, got the latest beta drivers, installed them, and still no dice.
Sorry for the uber late reply! Still no luck getting it working, so here's the DxDiag...

I don't think the lastlogin file being missing is an error, it can't exist the first time you run MC... this is probably just a probe to see if it exists (though Mojang should suppress the exception being logged in this case).
Looks like java has an exception with a file not found, not sure if this is causing it to fall over or not but it maybe related. Do you have any worlds created as yet? If not then try deleting the minecraft folder specified in the path: C:\Users\Joe Smith\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\
Ok, I deleted the folder ".minecraft" and tried running the game again. The Minecraft Launcher won't even show up now. Though, I do get an instance of Java running, but it's doing nothing. When I click on it in the taskbar, nothing shows up, and it just sits there next to my other programs running, Firefox, Winamp, etc. I know it's Java cos it's got the coffee cup logo.
Now that I think about it, this happened the very first time I tried running Minecraft. Somehow I got the launcher to show up (I think I restarted my machine), but that's as far as I got. So I suspect Java is screwed somehow. And I do also recall having woes with Java in the past when trying to install some Arduino software.
When I go to the Java website to do the simple "do I have Java?" test, all shows up as good. I'm lost!
Sorry, I should have been more specific, it wasn't a Windows update. AMD has some automated scheduled updater thing that comes up every once in a while... So I've already done this.
Thanks to all for the help, I really appreciate it! Hopefully you guys can still point me in the right direction?
Okie dokie, here's the new DxDiag. This time around, I clicked on the "Run 64 bit DxDiag" before saving all the info...

Do you have Anti Virus Grisoft?
YES:
Open Anti Virus Grisoft,
And turn off Linkscanner
NO:
If i helped pm me!
I even tried disabling AVG, and it didn't help.
I don't have IRC, nor know how to use it...
Ok, it's installed. Tried running Minecraft again. I got the Launcher this time, but same symptoms as in first post.
And just in case, here's a normal DxDiag (not 64 bit)...
