Step 2 - Mess with settings.
Try changing your performance to Max FPS and changing some other video settings including render distance. Also, you can mess with OptiFine settings if you want.
Step 3 - Downgrade Java.
Minecraft has trouble with the latest Java version, Java 7. It basically makes Minecraft increase used memory until it's really high, making MC lag a lot. This is what causes most of the lag spikes that make you close and reopen MC due to the severeness. If you have Jre 7, try downgrading to Jre 6.
As stated above, allocating more RAM is only useful for when you're running on far, and fancy(Which generally uses up more RAM). Optifine works great for me, but for some people it doesn't.
Disable file indexing, create exeptions for the .minecraft folder in your anti-virus program's configuration, disable unneeded services, launch Minecraft with the -Xincgc parameter, disable threaded optimization for Nvidia cards, run Minecraft in windowed mode... the list goes on.
Why do so much people suggest using more ram? It doesn't even help performance. I just keep with the default amount if i use a high res texture pack and it's still fine..
I get an "Out of Memory" error if I don't allocate more ram. Also, with the 1.3 update, in singleplayer, you running an internal server as well as running Minecraft. It's recommended that you do allocate more ram to suppress the server-sided chunk lag, lag spikes, etc.
Sometimes, Minecraft lag blocks the thought process and disallow users to peruse/completing their imaginative structures. Here are solutions about how to fix Minecraft lag.
Solutions:
1. Turn the render distance to short 2. Adjust video settings 3. Update Java 4. Update drivers and software 5. Turn off security software 6. Set Java on high priority 7. Set affinity 8. Fix Registry issues 9. Set graphic card performance 10. Check power supply and clean fans
Step 1 - Install OptiFine.
OptiFine is a mod that let's you tamper with more video options than you normally would get to, increases FPS, and fixes most lag. OptiFine: http://www.minecraft...-and-much-more/

Step 4 - Allocate more RAM to MC.
This can help majorly. If you have, say 4 GB of RAM, you could allocate about 1 or 2 GB of RAM to Minecraft. To allocate more RAM, follow this tutorial (not by me): http://muttsworldmin...-to-minecraft/.
Step 5 - Don't run other programs while playing MC.
Close programs such as internet browsers, etc. while playing Minecraft.
This should help.
Nope, if you put it on high FPS your graphics card has a chance of burning if it has high fps your graphics card has a chance of it burning like a BBQ, if your FPS is slow on MAX FPS your fine
