I've re-downloaded minecraft and everything and have tried to do many things I've seen people say will work, but the sound even though its on 100% and is on in the Mixer thing under volume will not work!
If you know how to help me, please, It's not the same without sound.
I have the same issue when I installed Minecraft on a new computer I just got.
I started messing around with the OpenAL32.dll file to get it to work (do a backup of the one in your windows/system32 folder, then copy the one from appdata/roaming/.minecraft/bin/natives/OpenAL32.dll into the windows/system32 folder).
But that didn't really solve it either. Sound came on just as I copied the file over, but when rebooting the PC and trying to start Minecraft I was still forced to hold F3 and press S to activate sound in Minecraft.
Not sure if it was related to the new installation on a new PC or if this was something that happened after the 1.2.5 patch (had been awhile since I played Minecraft before I got the new PC).
I'm having this problem. My sound worked fine, then it suddenly just went off and I can't get it to work. I didn't change anything. This happened right after minecraft became stressed on memory.
xwhitemousex, you are a god(ess)! Thank you for that. I just had this happen after messing with ntbexplorer on my player.day file. It was very odd, sound just not there, no errors or anything that I saw. F3+S and sound back on! WOOT!
It could be because i renamed the folder for my save i guess or no, cause even the menus didn't have sound. I don't know, so strange, but your fix SAVED ME from having to go crazy hehe thx +1'd ya

Wrong forum for this by the way. You would get better response in support.

Anyhow, F3+S should work for you.
