So, i've been noticing this for a while and now it's getting annoying. I joined a server today and I lagged until I look up I don't lag. I have a full bar connection on the server and yet I lag. Is there a reason why I'm lagging? If needed I can post screenshots of my comp specs and my minecraft video settings.
If your game lagging or the server? If your getting less FPS than normal, its client-side. The connection to the server has nothing to do with it. It could be that someone is dropping a lot of items, which will lag anyone nearby.
Please answer the following questions. Since you are on a server these questions are needed.
Press F3 to answer these questions.
Is your FPS low? If it is then you are experiencing client-side lag. Allow Java more memory and update Java. If this does not fix the issue then your computer is too slow. Post the specs for further confirmation.
Is your FPS moderate/high? If it is then you are experiencing either server-side or client-side lag. To check if it's server-side join another random server and see if it is still lagging. If it is then do this several times. If you are getting this consistently then it is your own connection. There is no real solution to solving server-side lag and getting a better Internet will improve your own client-side lag. Post your results from speedtest.net for further confirmation.

Is the server populated with like 10 or 20 people?
Does the server have lots of builds?
Like everyone else said, its just multiplayer lag. Your client will lag on multiplayer even if it doesn't on singleplayer simply because your processor and RAM can't keep up with the calculations. This isn't fixable unless you upgrade your computer or use optifine.
Try getting optifine. its approved by the minewiki and will help improve your speed. my friend tried it and now he can’t live without it. just in case back up your files before download.
