Installing a 64x Java on a 32x/86x system is impossible and vice versa. If you install any version of Java I suggest JDK's new updates ESPECIALLY if you are trying to run Developer's versions of mods. The bit of java doesn't really matter for performance other than this one major fact. 32x java only uses 1g naturally while 64x uses 3g, This doesn't really matter because you can allocate memory to java not that it's even needed.... Just save and restart your applications after some time. Problem solved.
Allocating more/less memory to minecraft isn't going to effect your FPS in any relative sense. Unless you have only 1g then allocate 512 to mc and 512 to java.... As java naturally takes 1g if you don't even have that 1g you will have serious issues with freezing and what not And allocate it in JAVA it self, not minecraft bat file. I just want to mention with my 2g's even setting java to 1g and mc to 1g as long as I set it below the max that I have I NEVER run out of memory, All these people talking about a memory leak are retarded and don't know anything about memory. I also want to mention that windows takes up memory too so don't forget to account for the current memory you are actually using before allocating it all to MC or java. (Not like MC even uses that much....) which also confuses me on why people QQ about minecraft and memory while they have 16g of it and don't know that memory doesn't effect fps in any sense AT ALL. Your video card effects FPS. NOT your CPU either unless your video card doesn't have a GPU in which case it must be 10 years old. LOL)
Updating drivers is a good idea however that's not going to effect your FPS you just most likely won't even be able to play with out an update.
I know a lot of people say, QQ, why should I have to use a mod for a game that worked 3 years ago with out it. WELL if it continued to work fine with every ones different computers there wouldn't be those mods in the first place. So after that said keep in mind if you have a really fast computer, The processing of a game can only go as fast as you set it or the makers of the game set it to run at. If you set your video card up right then you mostly wont need Optifine but if you can't and don't have those options then I really don't see another resolve for you.
Here are my computer specs.
AMD 1.80 Ghz
2g RAM
Windows XP SP3 32x
ATI Radeon 9550 256mgb
everything else you don't need to know. Now I only get 30-40 fps in minecraft with optifine, 20-30 with out it and constant FPS drops which make the game literally unplayable. Even in MC version 1.0 I had fps drop issues. I don't know where to begin the explanation of why the fps drops but I can tell you this. Everything in minecraft is naturally animated. With every update of minecraft more chunks get loaded at the same time. Now I know people shouldn't need to install mods and configure mc with every update and people QQ about having to upgrade computers just to play a game they bought 3 years ago. If you didn't see this coming then you aren't much of a gamer and don't really have the right to complain. AS EVERY GAME IS LIKE THIS. A marketing scheme for Hardware companies. Now you can either install Optifine and thank the maker, he worked so hard at making everything configurable or stop complaining and deal with your FPS drops down to 2.
I have always had optifine installed. I have been using it since I got minecraft which was a long time ago. Every time I install new mods I try to play MC with out optifine just to see, Constant freezing and fps drops, With optifine installed I still get those FPS drops till I configure it. How do you configure it you say? Well I'm glad you asked.
First, Turn all animations OFF, You can turn them on individually as you go to see if it effects your fps but I leave mine off anyway as there really isn't much "animation" to notice anyway. Besides the obvious, Fire, Water, Portals, Grass, blah blah blah.
The main setting I would like to mention that has helped me is, Dynamic Updates. Turn this ON. No matter what settings i change this setting has effected my minecraft experience by 110%. I can run around and not experience FPS drops, I sometimes just have to stop and not move for the worlds chunks to load.
Smooth FPS, and Smooth world, Turn these both on. I'm sure the name is explainable but if you need to know about one just hover your mouse over most of the settings in Optifine in game and most of the fuctions there will be a tooltip explaining what the options are for.
Turn graphics to FAST
Performance to MAX FPS
Advanced OpenGL MAX FPS (if changing this setting crashes you, You either don't have advanced openGL or your video card has the control setting off)
New feature is
Chunk loading, Turn this to SMOOTH.
Now this was not in previous versions of Optifine but is in the HD 1.4.2 versions.
I don't need this on, but with the new MC update it sure helps me.
Now I just want to mention, With out Optifine, No matter what "fix" I try or how many software updates I attempt. I get that damn FPS drop. This does not happen to me in any other games so this tells me it's Minecraft's issue, not my DirectX, Not my pos computer, Not my Drivers. People with computers that make mine look like a simple ATM machine STILL have this FPS issue. I would just like to say, if this happens to you in many games and not just minecraft. I would suggest research what game you play uses what and see if your video card has that setting off. For example. I can't Play league of legends untill I turn the shadows off, and not just in the game, On my video card setting. Then it runs fine.
My thoughts. Chunk loading causes the Video card to load more than it can process at one time resulting in FPS drops. Hence why I install optifine and "fix" it using Dynamic updating by setting it ON.
All the animations and crap are just Aesthetics, They don't really take a large load of resources.
Two reasons I use Optifine is, it allows me to configure what it's making my Video card do and I can run HD textures with out FPS loss. Since I have a 256b card, I can only run 128x128 texture packs, Physically can not run 256x256. Though I use 32x32. (Not that is runs any faster because it really doesn't, It just looks cleaner and not so fuzzed up like some 128 texture packs can get.)
If you have any questions feel free to PM me, I have been a computer tech since I was 8 and can probably provide you with information that can help. I actually laugh at people who buy an i7 core and complain that it wont run games. Listen, I don't believe there is one computer than can run every game in the world. Different video cards have different processing techniques and if they aren't supported by the game makers it won't run, Simple as that. Just a tip, Nvidia and ATI are competitors. They are naturally going to make things that don't work well together to sell product. If they didn't, everyone would just buy the best card on the market and it would work with everything then whoever didn't make better cards would go out of business because they would never sell a card ever. However both have great OpenGL compatibility but that's not what runs every game. (Just most)
To both of you, even though you have great computers, I would suggest allowing more memory to run into minecraft. Here's how:
#1. First create a .txt file in the same folder as your minecraft.exe.
#2. Then open that file.
#3. Type these two lines of text:
@ECHO OFF
"C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe" -Xmx2048m -Xms2048m -jar "C:\Minecraft.exe"
#4. Then save that file as a .bat file (aka Batch file). The way you do this is in the menu, hit Save-As, click "All File Types" and then change the name from XXX.txt to XXX.bat. The icon should change if you did it correctly and you should be able to run it. Hit F3 to make sure the allocated memory changed while running minecraft.
What that does is it authorizes minecraft to use up to 2048 Megabytes of memory on your computer. You can change the amount you want it to use by replacing 2048m with whatever number of MB you want it to use. Only use Mb though! So remember to convert KB and GB into MB! There you go! Hope this helps!
You only need 1 Java installed on your PC. I had 2 on accident. I had the 32 bit & 64 bit installed, and it was causing my game to freeze up at times. I uninstalled both, and reinstalled the 64 bit ONLY, and that solve my problem.
Try making the autosaves less frequent or completely disabled using optifine. There's an autosave bug that stutters minecraft. Some computer just freak out over the bug more so than others.

People say I should get a life. I listened and bought more health potions.
Now it crashes every 5 minutes, the process does not close even when forcing it with Task Manager, and I have to hold the power button to restart the computer.
Today, Monday, June 17, 2013, I am Playing Minecraft, In Full Screen And in A Server and I was gonna write a message in the server and Suddenly, Minecraft Freezes And Dosent Say it Crashed or That i Disconnected From the Server, Instead, Its Still in fll Screen and i Cant Exit Full Screen, Nor Open Windows Task Manager! I NEED HELP INMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!
I would just assume that it has something to do with Minecraft and Gaming laptops, because i also have a good LAPTOP and i have the same problem. So it seems that it is Laptop+Minecraft centered.
Every time I play Minecraft it works for about 15 minutes sometimes more or less and then it completely freezes everything including my computer. It just started doing this after the Minecraft launcher was installed. I have a windows xp 32 bit laptop and it runs other games very well but this one now. It is very upsetting to have to restart my computer every time i play it because it freezes my whole computer. Some one please help.
Then I found someone in these forums (dont remember who or where), who suggested that people should decrease the available memory for Minecraft, and even the author of Optifine claims the same. I set my Minecraft to 768 MB, and Tah-Dah! No more freezing or crashes for me
As you all know, Minecraft is set to 1GB by default, but it doesnt even use half of that while I'm using HD texture packs, playing on 1600x900 fullscreen, and using all graphics enhancements by Optifine. I dont know why, but for some reason decreasing the amount of RAM that is available for Minecraft actually helps fix the freezes and possible crashes.
I have yet to try 2x Far View Distance, but I am confident that it will work with 768 MB. Far and Normal works for me though.
Hope this helps (even though its been a long time since someone bumped this thread).
The reason why that works is because the system does not need to "dump" as much memory. There are programs (like minecraft) that will hog lots of memory no matter how much RAM is installed. Limiting that memory usage helps. (Also you should make a large (about 2GB) paging file on same harddisk as minecraft this will allow memory to be dumped into inactive storage where it can load quickly from. http://lifehacker.com/5426041/understanding-the-windows-pagefile-and-why-you-shouldnt-disable-it
HAVING A SIMILAR PROBLEM.
I have a good labtop, ive barely used my memory, I even have optifine and I usually get 40 to 60 FPS.But sometimes it just like everyone else freezes, and I cant do anything except left click and walk around.happens usually when I play hunger games.also I have full bars of wifi.
5. Try increasing PermaGen size and RAM with this command in a .bat file: -XX:MaxPermSize=128m and Xmx1G.
This fixed my lag spike issue. Game now runs like charm. Thank you so much. Only difference is that I set my min. memory to 1G and my max. memory to 2G.
I PAID $ MINECRAFT AND I GET CRAP

It says that it is unable to access the jar file
I had the same problem until I YouTube it. It turns out it's your Java.
1. You need the latest version of Java.
2. Make sure you download/install the correct version of Java vai 32 bit or 64 bit for you computer:
http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
