It's just not fair. How come skeletons get to ride spiders and we don't? (Beides the obvious reasons). I think there should be an update that allows you to ride spiders (eventually... take your time working on this game, Notch!)
Note: Edits are in red
Of course, it wouldn't be as easy as simply placing a saddle on a spider. You would actually have to tame the spider. Here's how it would work:
1) Find a spider (preferrably during the day) and make it notice you
2) Drop food for the spider to eat. Depending on the food, the spider will be tamed faster (EDIT: Both mushrooms can be found aboveground, added fish):
[*:34pr3d44]Raw Fish: 12 fish
[*:34pr3d44]Cooked fish: 10 fish
[*:34pr3d44]Raw Pork: 8 slabs
[*:34pr3d44]Cooked Pork: 6 slabs
[*:34pr3d44]OverworldMushroom: 8 shrooms (they're easy to find usually)
[*:34pr3d44]Cave Mushrooms: 2 shrooms
This means you would need some preparation and actually have to put effort into maintaining a spider. Alternate Method: ashtheking's mod requires you to feed the spider before every time you ride it. Because of this, I think it would be fitting to feed the spider, say, 12 bonemeal (4 bones). This way, you'd have to work a bit to maintain spider upkeep, but you can still conserve space in your inventory.
3) Once the spider is tamed, its eyes will turn from red to green, and will not attack you at night
4) Now you have a tamed spider!
The spider mount (you have to place a saddle on him) can jump 2 spaces high, and can travel twice as fast as you. I also thought that when you attacked with a weapon, the spider also attacks, giving you more damage per attack.
I also figured that these spiders, aside from riding, could be used as guards. You could craft web tile, an item that is now in the game files:
[] [] []
[]
[]
(where = String)
And place them like pressure pads. The spiders would walk along any adjacent web tiles you place, so you could make a "patrol area" (guard spiders FTW). If a mob crosses a web tile, the spider on that tile will begin attacking that mob. The spiders could take damage, but you can heal spiders by feeding them.
The spiders would stay friendly until you attacked them (or possibly if you don't feed them for 1 day), but they will wander away if not corralled by web tile or a fence.
The addition of a horde of spiders guarding your place would make for one badass fortress :biggrin.gif:
HOW THEY'RE DIFFERENT FROM WOLVES
[*:34pr3d44]Spiders take more effort to tame, which is balanced by the fact that they're more useful individually.
[*:34pr3d44]Spiders don't directly follow you when tamed. Instead, they'll follow the nearest web tile or wander around like normal.
[*:34pr3d44]Tamed spiders won't be directed by mob attacks. Instead, they act like they normally do, except against intruding mobs rather than you.
[*:34pr3d44]They'll attack creepers
[*:34pr3d44]You can ride them.
[*:34pr3d44]You can;t make them "stay" like wolves. Instead, a tamed spider will keep its location even outside of a chunk if there is nearby web tile. Same principle, different method.
Thoughts?

This sounds awesome, but would we be able to control where the spider goes when we are riding it?
Yes, it would work like walking, but you're bulkier. When you're riding a spider, you would take up a 4x4x4 2x2x2 space (like skeleton-spider teams do)
Yes, you could walk up walls with spiders now. Imagine making a PvP game where everyone rides spiders-- or a spider-rider vs castle defenders game!
I think there should be stages of tameness for all 'animal' mobs (not creepers, skeletons, or zombies):
:Spider:(red eyes) Wild - like now.
Tamed - will not disappear; Spiders (dark yellow eyes)won't attack unless attacked (even in darkness). These can be killed for resources as they re-spawn in their 'area'(spiders are exception), but wander away (become wild if you milk or take wool) and won't lay eggs. Max for pigs.
Herded - will never attack you; rely on you for protection. (spiders light yellow eyes) Take some time to re-spawn in their 'area', but lay eggs, let you take wool or milk, ect. Max for sheep, chickens, cows.
Domesticated - your friends! Fully your allies. Will DIE for you. Re-spawn at their 'nests'. Can be made into guards, armies, ect. Spiders (green eyes) are only ones to be here at the moment. 'Horses', 'Dogs', etc. would be maxed in this level too.
Spiders can also help you by making all other spiders nearby (you and your spider) neutral.
I can just see spider nests in your home made out of webs. You can come up and pet them and stuff, and they'll like you, enjoy your presence. I can't wait until Notch gets this game into full release with tons of options and stuff.

GENERATION 17: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.
A few things: four string for one patrol area is a lot. Maybe you can get 4-8 from the recipe? Can you get string from them? And what do you mean by "cave mushrooms" and "overworld" mushrooms? I wasn't aware there was much of a distinction.

This man really is a genius. Never have i seen such a clear and well written forum post.
This is so awesome, but there has to be a downside to it. Simply feeding a spider 8 pork you saved up seems too easy for such a powerful steed and guard.
Now, I don't want to go with the whole "limited time warranty" thing, because I hate it when stuff despawns.
You could solve some of the OP concern by having it that when two or more tamed spiders are near each other they will fight to the death. Now why they would fight I can't think of a reason, but I'm sure someone will.

I wholeheartedly approve of any and all efforts to allow Minecraft players to create their very own DARK ARMY. Especially if I get to ride my own War Spider into battle.
i like everything you said except for being able to jump higher. they cant jump two blocks high normally why should they be able to when they are carrying someone?

My Suggestions on Goblin Villages
Especially the web tiles.
All we need now is to tame a spider riding skeleton and we have armies...

Perhaps domestication can only be achieved on higher difficulties? And they could also be toggable on servers.
^^This.
Now how could we get that to work...
I love this idea I just can't see it being implemented any time soon.
