After my first nether fix topic here began to expand I decided that rather than continuing to edit the old post it would be easier and more convenient to start a whole new thread covering my updated suggestions
What is the Nether?
A extra-dimensional plane where the most valuable things are glowstone and the sulfur dropped by ghasts, what!
I dug down to the middle of the earth to get obsidian for this! I say it doesn't have to be like this.
What Does it Do Already?
I'll use a list to show the things that the Nether is already useful for
[*:2roz86o4]A Challenge for Advanced Players- The ghast is the hardest enemy in minecraft and the large amount of lava and neutral sword-zombies makes a good challenge for any player.
[*:2roz86o4]Resources-Glowstone and Soul Sand are useful elements, as is the infinitely burning netherrach. The easily found lava can also be useful
[*:2roz86o4]Travel-Going a distance in the Nether then making another portal allows you to travel long distances in the real-world, and when you make two portals in the real world they are much closer together in the nether than in the real world.(however the minecart/portal glitch makes this less useful)
Okay fine, you’ve explained your point now in one word tell me how to fix the problem
Biomes
I know your mind is blown with that premise, in my previous topic I had the idea for layers which I repurpose into biomes here. Each biome has its own resources and mobs (but mobs can leave there biome, kind of like how wolves spawn in taiga but can wander out of the biome if they want) biomes also would extend all the way from bedrock to bedrock. So in more advanced MC speak each biome would be approximately 64*64*124 (~4 chunks). Because each biome is completely different than the others I’ll describe them separately
Lava Biome
The nether as you know it, with a few changes.
Mobs
Zombie Pigmen- The most important change to these mobs would be the introduction of types. The standard pigman would use a golden sword, the second rarest would use a bow and arrows but have slightly less health, and the rarest of all would be the champion pigman. The champion would ware leather armor and wield a stone sword making for a harder challenge. On average a pack of pigmen would have 1 champion, 6 normal, and 3 archers, a smaller group would normally be 4 normal and 1 archer. These improved pigmen tribes would be at war with the ghasts and will actively hunt and kill them. If a tribe sees you hurt a ghast they will instantly forgive you if they’ve been chasing you.
Ghasts- as they are now for the most part.
Super creepers- these giant creepers reside underground and are as troublesome as their mundane cousins. A super creeper has the exact same explosion trigger, cancel and radius as normal creepers but rather than blowing stuff up they set it on fire. If you, netherrach, wood or any other flammable material is caught in the radius of a super creeper explosion it is set alight
Imps- found in dark underground areas in groups. They move quickly and attempt to flank you.
Resources
Better Glowstone- glowstone should drop 5-7 dust every time you break it meaning that you only have to break 3 glowstone to make 2 new ones
Darkwood- Grows just like a normal tree with dark bark it’s leaves have a chance of dropping darkshards which can be planted on neterrach to make more trees or used to craft dark glass, which looks like normal glass but emits light like a torch.
Granite- a new nether ore about as rare as iron. It hase the strength of iron but the durability of diamond.
Pyroxine- another ore found deep in the nether about as rare as redstone. It has the strength of stone but has over triple the durability of diamond
Diamond- just like its overworld counterpart but slightly less rare.
Netherrach- about as common as smooth stone in the real world and found in all biomes. Has a 10% chance of dropping sulfur when mined
Slow sand- not in this biome, we’ll get back to it later
Weather
When it ‘rains’ in this part of the nether it rains fire. Seriously fire falls from the sky setting everything in its path on fire. When it stops all the fires go out
Ice Biome
A cold counterpart to the more common lava biome
Mobs
Crags- (modified from Mr. Torb’s idea) about for blocks tall this monster has double the health of a normal zombie, but about the same strength. It drops ice when killed. It also spawns underground.
Nether Wolves (aka Hell Hounds) - stronger and tougher than overworld wolves, they can be tamed with redstone, however they will not follow you out of the nether.
Resources
Obsidian- Lava literally freezes in this biome becoming this notoriously invulnerable rock
Ice- like in the overworld it leaves water in it’s place when broken but the water evaporates when it leaves the biome
Marble- another ore found deep in the nether about as rare as redstone. It can only be mined by diamond. It has the strength of diamond but has double the durability
Diamond- just like its overworld counterpart but slightly less rare.
Netherrach- about as common as smooth stone in the real world and found in all biomes. Has a 10% chance of dropping sulfur when mined
Weather
The snow comes down and comes down hard. Water freezes, lava freezes, and you freeze. While in the blizzard you take half a heart of damage every 5 seconds.
Acid Biome
The rarest biome is characterized by giant lakes of green liquid
Mobs
Ghasts- yep, just normal ghasts
Zombie Squids- aggressive squids that swim in the lakes
Resources
Acid- The green liquid if you haven’t already figured it out is acid and can hurt you if you swim in it. Unlike normal water you don’t get an oxygen meter when swimming in acid, you immediately take damage as if drowning. It spawns very frequently at all depths of this biome
Sulfur- normally found among the soul sand on the coast of acid lakes, this yellow block drops a sulfur dust when destroyed.
Diamond- just like its overworld counterpart but slightly less rare.
Netherrach- about as common as smooth stone in the real world and found in all biomes. Has a 10% chance of dropping sulfur when mined
Weather
Acid rain plagues this biome. All dirt and mundane sand dissolve and you take half heart of damage every 5 seconds
Seeing as how there aren't any Nether suggestions that span more than 100 pages, I'm going to recommend you check out the New Nether suggestion, which has already proposed a number of different biomes, such as Gloomwood forests, Fissures that extend across several map chunks, and even Volcanoes that can naturally erupt. We're currently in the middle of different weather suggestions, such as Acid Rain and Ash Fall (like snowfall, but "falls" towards and accumulates on the ceiling)
I suggest you check the thread Grey posted as well. We took some of your ideas and tried to mold them, along with others, around a core concept.
Seeing as this thread is mostly about biomes, I think you're gonna be a pretty good addition to the think tank when we finish polishing Grimhounds and "The Lamp" to be put in the main post.

Feel free to share any ideas or critisisms
I don't think I will, I like the biomes idea.
