I was thinking, what if mining was different? What if you didn't need to smelt ores, but you were required to craft them instead?
Thus, I suggest the following:
- When you mine an ore, rather than getting the full material, you would get 9 cobblestone and 1 smaller version of the item. There would be iron chunks, (9 to make iron ingot) gold nuggets, (9 to make gold ingots, + gold nuggets already exist) and diamond shards (9 to make a diamond.)
- These smaller versions of the items (all except coal and redstone and lapis) could be used as currency when trading with testificates.
- No more annoying smelting for iron -- instead its annoying crafting. :tongue.gif: No, I'm not suggesting that minecraft should be more of a pain in the ass, but I'm suggesting that we should have to craft rather than smelt. And its cool to have smaller versions of every item.
- There should be bigger versions of every item as well. Why just iron, diamond, lapis and gold blocks? Apparently they're for storage, but if you mine everything you see, lets face it -- its redstone and coal that takes up the most space. However though, its ironic because you can't turn them into block form. So I'm suggesting that we should. Coal could function like netherrack, and redstone blocks could function like redstone torches and have tremendous use in redstone machinery.
- When you break a diamond tool, iron tool, or gold tool, you will get small versions of what was used to craft it back. So if you break a sword, you get 2 small versions of the item, if you break a pick you get 3 small versions, etc. It just doesn't seem right that you completely lose a tool when it breaks.
- Small versions of these items could be used to repair tools and armour when used on an anvil (crafted with 4 iron blocks). Only gold tools, diamond tools, and iron tools + armour really require repair, so it would be nice to be able to repair them. Repairing them should be more efficient than just creating a new one every time.
- Enemies could drop these small items. There could be skeleton warriors who use iron swords and drop iron chunks, and in the (hopefully coming) aether-like sky dimension, there could be a MOB that drops diamond shards. Basically, we can have MOBs drop these materials, but it won't be too overpowered or too rare.

I think the ore system is fine the way it is, no need to overhaul code for something that's not broken.

Perhaps, but I'd at least like to be able to break iron and diamonds into smaller forms -- or perhaps smelting an ore would give 6 or so small items. To counter this, ores could spawn in larger veins.
This would seriously effect servers with iConomy's economy.

1. okay intersting idea bot the iron chunks and nuggets and shards(go into more detail in a second). but the smelting makes it seem more realistic bc in life u have to smelt ore to get ingots
2.using this as currency is not a bad idea
3.no comment
4.i aggree with you on that we should have blocks for all the ores.
5.how bot instead of smaller versions you get shards of the item that was used to craft it so u break a pick u get like 3 shards of whatever you crafted it with(except wood). and u can use those as currency or to repair items.
6.anvils a decent idea make the reicipe like
I=iron block
X=Nothing
xxx
III
XIX
then you can use some shards to repair the objects placed on the anvil.
7.or u can have zombies that died with different types of gear like iron boots and a sword... and so on a so forth......... and maybe have npcs that actually expand villages and mercenarys and differnt types (the current ones are kinda dull) but so they have a better AI and can do stuff then have like mercenarie ones u can hire and merchants that travel.
all in all i like some of your ideas with a little tweaking here and there :ohmy.gif: :huh.gif: :laugh.gif:

How so?
Iron nuggets
