You should be able to build mob traps. These you could place above a block and then when a mob walks into it the trap falls on it and captures the mob. Then the block acts like a cage, and you can carry it around, essentially carrying mobs around. To release the mob you have to hit the cage until it breaks.
The mobs will need specialized cages depending on their strength, otherwise they will break out of it on their own. Neutral mobs can be caught in cages made of wood, and the current hostile mobs can be caught in cages of iron. The new mobs from the Halloween update sound more difficult, so they might need cages made of gold or something. For upcoming water mobs, you would have to craft a net instead, which would just be an aquatic version of a trap.
Allowing players to capture and transport mobs would be useful and fun for a variety of reasons. You can look forward to labryinths with mobs, zoos, more "slime-powered" minecarts and other silly things, animal husbandry for large-scale farms, dungeons, etc. This would allow the world to be even more in the control of the player by allowing them to make use of living things too instead of just inanimate things.
