it's really difficult to build bridges since you have to stand on the very edge of the block and look out. I don't know exactly what the best solution to this problem is, but I feel like the problem needs to be solved.
One idea is to give players the ability to lean over the edge of blocks to see better.
I don't mean to sound too negative here, but I really don't think that the difficulty of bridge building is so excessive that it constitutes a game feature to compensate. If you take a central walkway out as far as you want the bridge to go, building the rest from there is a snap (you can just walk backwards and build the blocks you need from the beginning with no leaning over). Further, I personally think that buildings are only more impressive if they're more difficult to put together in the first place, so I can't really approve of making things outright easier just for the sake of it - except things like flooding, which was more of an anti-grief thing than a ease-of-work thing.
Yeh, once stuff like CTF and Survival come around, hard to build bridges will be important. Those moats with lava at the bottom you build will actually mean something.

Exactly. The great thing about minecraft is that is simple. The inherent simplicity creates certain difficulties, as with bridge building, but at the same time it (perhaps unintentionally) adds a layer of skill. Skill demands respect, and I don't think that should be lost. That's why I disapprove of hacking so much.
I was thinking about some sort of bridge laying button or tool, it might drop the block down instead of straight ahead, connecting to whatever floor your on. So that you dont have to edge over and look down.
We have floating islands to deal with now, it could come in serious handy. Or an option that lets you offset where your blocks come from, 1 block above or below center say.

I kinda gotta agree with this. Despite the difficulties I have had so much trouble with (a world of floating spheres means lots of building onto edges), removing this makes things too easy, and the challenge becomes trivial, nullifying the impressiveness.

I also agree. Shadowmarch would be SO much easier to build if I didn't have to hang off the edge for every rampart, overhang, and bridge, but I wouldn't be nearly as proud of it.
bridge building in a hurry would be good in an action mode of the game, but I agree it does take away from the creative mode. However. we are going to need some way to move from one floating island to another. Flying works, but maybe we dont all do that? Making a bridge works but it can be tedious and leaves a mess. i have an idea im going to search around before I post.

Also, I think bridge building is perfectly fine and is no need of a change.
I think trying some stuff out in indev might be fun. I don't know if something like this should make it into the game, but I can't really say until I've tried it.
I feel like some kind of crouching (slower, a bit lower down to the ground) would look nice (people crouching to build a bridge/wall forward from on top), make sense, and be helpful without being... er, strange. I can't imagine what this would be like, but I feel like it would be strange.

I messaged Notch last night on IRC to suggest crouching, and he said it sounded like a good idea and added crouching to the todo list, so we'll probably get it eventually.
for the current situation, wouldn't a "walking" feature be more appropriate?

There once was a suggestion that if you clicked at the edge of a block it would add one to the side.
It should be the last pixel of a block. Picture coming of what I mean.

I like that idea, though I am still fine with the current situation.
