Being a long time rail fan and a player of simutrans, openttd, and locomotion and living in a city where 4 Railways run through, has me wishing that there were actual trains in the game.
Since theres already mine carts, hopper cars wont be too much of a problem (though more modern, larger, faster hoppers may me needed for realism\fun)
Also, parts of locomotives should have to be built seperatly so that the can be variation in the designs. Say putting 3x3 blocks of steel + 1 Oil in the fabrication machine might make a Medium Sized Engine.
To make locomotives or wagons\cars one should have to build a machine that may craft larger things (thus having a 5x5 grid for working) like Locomotives and cars. a simple box car could be like
:Iron:------------
The iron is for the axles and the wood for the box it self.
As for the engines, it would require alot of iron and if possible, include oil to add into making trains (lubrication, fuel, transporting, etc)
those are just a few locomotives of the many I know about, but only 1 or 2 of steam, diesel, and electrics should be used so that players dont end up needing to remeber which way to build stuff.
Also for rails, the mine tracks are a little to sharp for regular trains, at most train can make take maybe a 3x3 turn at very slow speed to reduce the risk of derailment
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Its the little details that make up the big picture.
Hmm, Notch seems to be trying to keep the game simple, so all those locomotives are unlikely to be implemented into the game.
[Edit]I've just seen that you stated that these are just a few examples. However, boxcars, hopper cars and all those might already be too much. This shows in minecarts: There are only three types.
[/edit]
But heck, having a F9 stand on my rail yard would be just badass
[Edit2] Another issue: How would the game deal with longer vehicles such as the 2-10-4 Selkirk?
It might work in curves, but going a layer up/down would look weird.
As awesome as trains would be, i doubt that it would be doable.
Also, i already use my minecarts for long distance transportation, serving the use of trains.
