Why can't shears be crafted from different materials? I think you should be able to craft them out of wood, stone, gold, and diamond. What do you think?
Maybe they want different materials for getting the wool off of sheep much easier so they can make a bed sooner. Tough luck though you just have to deal with it and find iron soon.

I guess it makes some sense from a game play perspective, so you have to advance to the "iron age" in order to sleep through the night.
its completely pointless, iron works fine the way it is. You also didnt do a good job explaining what each tier would do- what would wood do? what would diamond do? etc.

Well, if you observe how other tools are effected by different materials; they get more durability and perform their job faster. Now the speed attribute will have no difference with the shears, but the durability attribute will increase as better materials are used to craft it. This means that wooden and gold shears would only be able to have a small amount of uses, stone would have even more, iron the same amount as now, and diamond would have a very large amount of uses.
Shears are meant to be a unique tool from the other tools.
It doesn't have to be just like a pickaxe where it has different kinds of materials you can make on the pickaxe.
Shears are just totally fine and it is a unique tool. If it has different materials you can use to change the shears durability and speed, then it doesn't really make a difference other than changing the durability and the appearance of the shears.
In short, Shears don't need to be change at all.
Iron is abundant enough that you can spend a whole two bars of it on shears once in a while.

Iron is not abundant in Skyblock. But then, it's supposed to be a challenge. No shears just means you have to do it the way I did on Xbox before I moved to pc: breed then kill, repeat. On Xbox you could breed, shear, then kill, and get more wool. Skyblock you get one wool per sheep. Makes it go slowly, but it goes.
Still, gold is also hard to get in Skyblock, and gold shears would be nice. I think wood shears would make the start of the game too easy -- normally you have to kill a few sheep at the start, or else do without a bed for a while -- but gold and diamond shears would be good, and not negatively impact the game.

I made a map that needs a good boss. So a (enter boss here) should be made it should only be for maps
Aren´t iron and gold already better than diamond? They have more uses than just tools, unlike diamond, which has only one use that isn´t related to tools.
The gap between iron and diamond, in terms of tool durability and armor protection, is so large it isn't funny - even with Unbreaking III iron tools still have only 2/3 the uses of diamond tools and diamond armor has double the protection (80% damage reduction is far more than the 60% of iron since you get only 20% of the damage, instead of 40%). You also save on enchanting and repair costs, particularly in 1.8 where only the prior work penalty factors into the repair costs (previously the higher durability of diamond added up to 15 levels to the cost relative to iron; ironically, armor durability nerfs meant that diamond armor cost the same as iron, and much if you wear less than full armor to get similar protection to full iron, which is already enough).
In fact, this is why I only consider diamond to be a worthwhile material for tools and armor past the early game, never mind if it doesn't have many other uses (conversely, the abundance of iron makes it too easy to get rather powerful gear). I use shears often to clear cobwebs from cave spider spawners but they last a lot longer than other tools, even an Unbreaking III diamond pickaxe.
Also, wooden shears would not make it much easier to get a bed on the first day; after all, sheep do drop wool when killed and you'll probably find at least three as they spawn in packs of four, and since 1.8 they drop meat as well so just killing them on the first day is more beneficial.
If anything about shears should be changed, it should be allowing you to directly enchant them, as they currently are at a major disadvantage compared to other items since you have to waste repairs to enchant them (each time you combine them with a book you lose one of only six repairs, so the Efficiency V, Unbreaking III shears I carry around to clear cave spider spawners, which is a case where they do benefit from a faster mining speed as you want to get to the spawner as fast as possible, would lose at least a third of their lifetime, more since Eff V usually means combining at least one more time).
But diamonds don´t allow you to make minecart tracks, pistons, or anything that is useful and only needs to be replaced if you let Creepers blow it up, unlike iron or redstone.
As for being able to directly enchant shears, the inability to do so almost seems like a bug, even if it seems to be intentional, as there is no reasonable point in not being able to directly enchant them.
Well, maybe I am an exception because of my playstyle, but I use hardly any iron, far less than diamonds for repairing my gear, to the point where it is a joke, diamonds and coal are the only resources I actually use in any amount; I could even have only those ores generate and would not have any problem supplying my meager needs for other materials from chests after I get to the point where I do nothing but cave (e.g. loot from one mineshaft, and that's not showing the rails on the ground which I fill double chests with, far more than I can ever hope to use; indeed, this thread says just that regarding iron; "So what can I do with all this iron? Making minecart tracks is useless... All I have to do is go down into the cave system and break the tracks in the mineshaft. So that's not an option."). Similarly, while I need iron for anvils I can just use ingots from zombies and chests as each use only uses a bit more than one ingot; the powered rails I need (only abut half a stack is needed to make 1 km of railway with an optimal spacing) can be made with gold from chests, and so on.
But why wouldn't you want to have the option to make them out of other materials, like the sword or pickaxe?
Because its completely pointless.
The speed would be no different, but that's not the only advantage to making tools out of a stronger material. You get more uses as well... :dry.gif:

Ever mined some stone with a wooden pickaxe?!

The point is, no. Shears shouldn't give you an instant bed on your first night.
Diamond shears should have a attack bonus like 3-4
