The spears should not be like tridents, You should be able to jab with spears and throw spears. I think you should also be able to craft them with two sticks and one piece of flint.
You got a point.
I think game ought to have spears, historically important weapons, but as intermediates between melee and ranged weapons. But not from flints! I think of 3-stick and 1-iron-,1-gold-ingot recipe. (see - attachment)
How they should be balanced?
Pros:
+ Decent damage per stab (not as high as axes tho)
+ High knockback
+ Longer reach than other weapons (like for hoes)
+ You can throw spears...
+ ...with adjustable force...
+ ... with little water resistance.
Cons:
- Long recuperation time like in axes
- Minimum stabbing range - you must keep distance, if enemy is 2 blocks away or less either change weapons or hope you can punch it into stabbing distance (hoes do not share this disadvantage for they are bashing/hacking/mauling weapons) - beware of fast foes!
- Short charge-up before stab
- Long charge-up before throw
- Mediocre maximum range in comparison to crossbows and bows
- High error value for ranged weapon - crossbows and bows are much more accurate
- Cannot throw if there are blocks or slabs 3 blocks in front of your head. Note: Tridents should share all these traits, but with significant improvements in durability, damage, and range. And spears should share all tridents' enchantments.
Dwarf gamer found:
Buildings - square, not round
Materials - from rubble mound
Dark caves - lit 'n' cleaned out
Settlements - deep underground
Farmability - to grinder bound
Shields - made creepers but sound
Axes and crossbows - taking mobs out

Why do we need this?
Not needed since we have Tridents.
I mean, it could do less damage, but have farther reach. Maybe if attack is charged, it is thrown.
Would be cool for it to be introduced through a new mob that lives in tribes.
Please note the name of the game is MINEcraft!
IF I run into a tribe of hostiles I want my bow and arrow!
