Water bottles are a pretty common thing to fish up, and... well, they can be useful, especially when it comes to brewing, But they are a bit boring. Perhaps every now and then you could fish up a message in a bottle, which is essentially a treasure map in a bottle? It can be rare, probably a 1/200 chance or something along those lines. But I just think it would be a cool addition to an already really cool game.
Interesting idea, but that might lead into problems with things like automatic fishing. Maybe if there is a cooldown of a few days between reading the message before a new one is possible.
I suppose AFK fishing might be a problem but I'm sure Mojang will find a way to permanently patch it, by changing trapdoor or pressure plate physics or something. The cooldown idea could work, but it would seem a bit odd to non-AFK fishers.
Maybe paper could be written on, and bottled messages could be "fun messages" written on paper (like splash texts on title screen, but with more context) such as hints about the game; little jokes; help messages; hints about where to find treasures; spelled out creature sounds or onomatopoeias; etc.
No, no, your idea is actually fine. My comment is not meant to be mutually exclusive with it. It would be nice if bottled messages had treasure maps some times as well.

I do hope the patch for AFK fishing happens because then it would force players to earn their enchantments and other loot instead of expecting it to drop in their lap while they were having tea and biscuits all day.
A message in the bottle idea sounds interesting, perhaps this could be used to change the way mending books are acquired, a treasure map of sorts, you look at the map, and find where the mending books are located at, such as in a cave or a pirate ship. Upon arrival the player finds a chest with 1 mending book, and 9 gold ingots.
I'm not daft about this, I realize this would mean mending would no longer be infinitely farmable which is a problem for people playing on legacy console world types. But for a long time mending has been viewed as overpowered, and it being too easy to acquire causes the unbalance issue, AFK fishing makes it worse obviously, but even without this mending should require more player input than simply fishing, IMO.
Isn't there already a fix in place in the snapshots for AFK fishing? Something about the amount of water or something, or if it's exposed to sky?
Yeah Xisuma did a video on it:
But I like the idea of fishing up a treasure map, or a message in a bottle, even if it's a fun note on a piece of paper, makes the game seem more occupied, if you will.

The treasure map could be used to gain various loot besides be the replacement for how mending is acquired, and removing the book from direct fishing and librarians, this would bring it into balance and make the challenge proportional to the benefits, which is making your gear last forever.
Note, this would not include bows and fishing rods.
Yes they would have mending, but it wouldn't help the game to make the time to acquire the treasure map unreasonable, it should take some time but it shouldn't take players months or years just to acquire a map to 1 mending book location, otherwise it would essentially become a useless enchantment as most players wouldn't have a full set of mending armour, because it took so long that they gave up trying to look for the item.
Honestly, I don't see the big deal everyone makes about getting loot from fishing, or AFK fishing for that matter. Don't like it? Don't do it, simple as that. If you accidentally get a mending book while fishing normally, throw it away if you don't want it.
But as to the idea of the OP, I was thinking even a note in a bottle that says something vague like "To the west, in a jungle, is an old temple" to tell you there's a jungle temple to find. It doesn't give you an exact location like a treasure map does, but still encourages exploration to go find it.

AFK fishing is being balanced with the "in_open_waters" condition that is now required in order to get loot from fishing.

Remember those versions that minecraft pranked us with? Specifically:
Minecraft 2.0
Minecraft 1.VR-Pre1
Snapshot 15w14a
Minecraft 3D
Those are still downloadable! Watch this video for 2.0:
To download the other ones you need to make a folder in the versions folder for minecraft and put the client and JSON file for the versions in there. They all need to be named the same aside from file extensions. Once you do that, you will be able to choose that version when making a new profile with the minecraft launcher.

The problem with directions like this is that there is no in-game way for the player to determine what they were talking about unless landmarks were used exclusively. The player cannot know where "the west" is without using the F3 menu, which is not a very good interface for basic survival. I also don't see how this could be programmed very well, as you'd have to have some way to identify different structures around the player and then generate instructions based on the relative position of these structures. It may not sound so hard, but the identification part would be an obstacle.

Debug mode is also impossible in the non beta version of Minecraft bedrock edition, F3 key does nothing, while in Java it brings up a whole bunch of things, like your in-game memory usage, your system specs, nearest light level, biome, and your coordinates.
But you do get to set coordinates to remain on in the world settings which is a good thing, it's just that with this you can't turn them on and off on the fly. Something Mojang does need to correct in future updates and a debug mode for bedrock edition would be useful.
Debug could be made accessible by pressing the select button on the Xbox One controller too, if Mojang coded it in.

Well, most people know, I would hope, that west is the direction the sun sets. The game also knows the seed and what biomes and structures are going to exist in the world, even if by extrapolation. It may be difficult and probably not worth the programming time when they could be fixing bugs, but should be possible, even if only on the level that AMIDST predicts where biomes and structures are. Anyway, it was just an idea being tossed out there, for the fun of it.

I like your idea and don't think it would make mending that harder to get since it could still be obtained through trading with librarians.
They could also remove them from the librarians, which had to be found first, not all villagers have them.
