Currently you either have to install a mod (which is not ideal if you want to play vanilla) or use some very cumbersome methods involving nether portals to keep remote chunks loaded.
This makes things like long distance railroads to transport items not worth building. You are also forced to AFK at farms instead of being able to play elsewhere while resources are produced.
I would personally like to see a simpler way to keep chunks loaded added to SINGLEPLAYER Minecraft.
Perhaps an idea would be to have the furnace minecart load chunks around it as long as it is fueled. This behaviour would be optional (and disabled by default) in multiplayer minecraft for performance reasons. But we should definitely have this option if we want to use it in our single player world. This would open up a world of new possibilities!
Thanks, but I wanted mainly to be able to transport items over long distances, so this is not the ideal solution (since i would have to keep too many chunks loaded at the same time). The furnace minecart could work as a mobile chunk loader, only loading chunks in a range around it.
Using that command you can enable/disable each chunk (maybe more, I've never used the command so I can only guess) while yes with Chunk Loaders you get a block and more to cover but I'd say.
But as Chunk Loader mods use the chunkload command (as I've come across with Azure Doom's or ChunkNoGoByeBye, others I'm not too sure like Chunk Loaders https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/chunk-loaders but they don't output the same in chat like the others do, only having more selectable coverage in a UI depending on the tier determines the coverage) only in block form/having recipes these days unless you want one for survival and to craft/keep with what you know of modding sure but otherwise it's not really that worth it really.
I use them because it's easier/I'm used to mods and don't really know enough about the command but I assume if you used it enough you could accomplish the same, and with all chunkloaders doing the same as the command compared to before the command existed you can go with either.

What do you think?
In 1.13+ you can use /forceload to keep Chunks loaded
