I'd like to see wood armor as some sort of starter armor. People barely use leather armor because people usually get iron. We have wooden tools so wooden armor should be added. Not sure about stone because stone is heavy. And possibly obsidian armor.
-1 Totally disagree
You can quite easily get leather by killing a few cows.. something you would normally do to get something to eat anyway & while wandering around you'll bound to come across cows. (I also wish we had the old 'Rotten Flesh Smelted to Leather'/'Rotten Flesh Smoked to Leather' crafting recipe as standard in Minecraft)
Stone, as you say, would technically be too heavy so that would also rule out having Obsidian as that would be even heavier
If there should be any additional armour - I would like to suggest a way to actually craft the Chainmail armor (I think you can only get this through villager trading or rare drops/Chests but could be wrong) & having turtle shell armour...Currently we only have the turtle helmet
Chainmail armour has the same protection as Gold Armour but same durability as Iron - perhaps Crafting recipe could be Iron nuggets instead of Iron ingots ?
.. With a bit of mining you could easily make a full set of Chainmail armor for protection with only 3 iron ingots
The Turtle shell helmet has a durability somewhere between Iron & Diamond with a Protection same as Iron/Chainmail, with the addition of 10 second of Water breathing effect..I suggest that with additional Turtle Armor we could increase the Water Breathing effect the more armour you wear

In this case all armor aside from leather should be removed; most rocks, including obsidian, are less dense than iron, gold, or diamond (diamond is also an awful material to make armor or tools out of as it is brittle):
Also, the problem I see with leather is that you may as well not wear any armor at all, especially since 1.9; for example, a creeper explosion deals up to 49 damage on Normal, which will easily penetrate leather to the maximum possible, from 7 to 1.4 armor points, which only reduces damage by 5.6%, giving you the equivalent of 21.2 health - that's not going to make any difference, even from a distance unless you are near the edge of the damage radius (the damage from the distance at which they stop moving before exploding is about half the maximum, which is still a deadly 23.1 damage after armor reduction). I only ever wear leather helmets dropped by mobs since I otherwise do not wear a helmet as part of my normal armor; it is much better to use the leather you find early on for books.
Likewise, diamond armor is pretty much necessary since 1.9 (and even then enchanted diamond armor - a point-blank creeper explosion is only reduced to 33.81 damage, still over 1.6 times your health, which is simply ridiculous, as if the 2 hearts that you were left with on Hard before wasn't enough; sure, you can survive with enchanted armor even on Hard but other mobs are even more insignificant than before since armor penetration effectively amplifies the damage taken as it increases); if they change combat in a future update they should remove general armor penetration, leaving it for specific damage sources or weapons, like it was before (e.g. Poison is not affected by armor unless you have Protection; in my own version I made axes penetrate armor in the same way as 1.9's mechanic).
We already have four (technically five if you count chain) armor types, the problem is that only two of them are used.
Leather armor and gold armor need some changes IMO.
Firstly, gold armor could be made actually useful if it was given high protection. Keep its durability just as low as it is now, for balance (and because it's in the spirit of gold tools not being durable), but the protection could be put up to, let's say, 9 armor bars, so it's better than iron but still worse than diamond.
Secondly, leather armor is useless since iron is even easier to find than leather in most cases, all you have to do is dig down and/or find a cave or two and you can get the 24 iron required for a full set easily, whereas cows are scattered around the map and in too little numbers to get 24 leather swiftly, instead you would have to breed them, which takes way more time than getting iron.
Either we could make cows spawn more often, and possibly drop a little more leather, or we could add another source for gathering leather, for example, other mobs rather than just cows could drop it (which would be realistic since 15% of humans' leather supply comes from sheep and 11% from pigs), or it could be found occasionally in the ground, I'm not sure.
Either way, something should probably be done IMO, because while leather is fun to make as you can dye it pretty colors, it's next to useless, and gold armor needs a lot more than good enchantability (and being the prettiest thing in existence) to be worth it.
I sincerely believe it’s a nice idea too, but thinking about it is not very realistic; as it would be strange to see a person walking around in wooden armor.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Idea; Make cows drop more leather and less meat, so leather armor is easier to make.
My suggestions: Enhancements - Throwable Fire Charges - On Phantoms and Elytra. Also check out The Minecraftian Language. This signature is not here to waste your space.
