This would certainly be useful. Would the magnet increase the reach of the player? If so, by how much? I would suggest multiplying it by two so it doesn't become too OP. Crafting it with redstone and iron ingots sounds logical, and it should take damage as it is used.
This is already possible in Java Minecraft.
If you create your world with Game Mode: set to Creative then when you open Inventory you will be able to add nearly ANY Block or item into your inventory.
Also when placing blocks when in this mode you don't use any out of your inventory.
When you create a world in "Creative" mode cheats are set on so you can then change from Creative (Mode 1) back to Survival (Mode 0) by using the /Gamemode command.
So, if you are in Creative and want to go to normal play you would hit /g and then hit Tab.
/Gamemode will be now on your screen. Just hit the space bar, 0, and enter and you will be in Gamemode 0 (Survival).

You don't get the point. This is supposed to be like a real world magnet - this item will attract items bringing them to the player.
When you're building up high or mining glowstone, often times you'll drop a whole bunch of items. When I do it I get self conscious and I want to pick up every single one before they despawn. This item would really help settle my nerves when I'm working in situations like this.
I'd like a few more details, though. How far can the magnet pick up items?

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.

Magnet (Item)
I Wish They Could Make a magnet where you can get blocks from far away and get them in your inventory. If you are building something and you need the blocks you just grab the magnet and the blocks will then go in your inventory
For Example:

That could work.

Hmm. Not a bad idea.
A crafting recipe would use a button, iron ingots, and redstone dust.
Here is a quick texture I made for it.
Ink Machine.
