Mojang invented floating islands by accident. It was a world generation glitch. However, players liked it so much that they never bothered to fix it. However, I believe that this is more than just a convenient accident. This is an idea, and it needs to be expanded on.
I believe that large floating islands should generate regularly, and the world height should be raised (with cubic chunk rendering instead of square) to compensate. Then there Could be a new biome called "Floating Mountains" that consists of a normal ocean, except that there are a bunch of giant floating islands above, which even have ores in them that disobey the normal ore generation rules, aka spawn height.
Finally, there could be a new dimension or world type, called Skyblock, made entirely out of floating islands, with nothing but the void below them. Although maybe, instead of the void, players who fall past y=0 in this dimension will find themselves at y=512 in the overworld. Better bring some elytra! Also, let me know if you have any expansions for this idea.
I'm not a huge fan of floating islands, but I get why they are so popular. I would be a bigger fan of them if they actually looked like islands instead of worldgen bugs, but I still don't like them being over a normal landmass. It just comes with too many issues. Giant dark spots causing mobs to spawn, waterfalls making ugly flowing puddles on the ground, etc.
But all of that would be resolved if these were over ocean instead of land (and if there was no lava falls generation on them so you don't get the patches of smooth stone). The dark patches would be over water, the waterfalls would flow into the ocean, and the ocean would be substantially more interesting.
Support for sky islands if over ocean, support for a sky block world type, no support for the dimension.

I think this idea has potential. It would probably be best if the islands generated over a large ocean to prevent them from causing issues over the normal land.
You should add a maybe option for the poll, because I ended up choosing 'i like celery sticks" and "i like pancakes."

Partial Support.
Okay, so maybe the floating mountains biome would have ocean below the islands instead of plains? And I'm guessing the issue you're talking about is shadows allowing mob spawning? Okay. That makes sense!
Also, I added those options for people with a sense of humor.

I agree that there is an issue with the giant dark spots. Another Idea is that Mojang should make the shadows depend on the direction of the sun. As for the waterfalls, I don't even know if those are even a big enough deal for Mojang to do what it takes to stop that from happening.

The waterfalls are a bit of a nitpick, but the way to fix it is to find that part of worldgen code and add an exception for this biome. The block light based on sun direction would be really cool but it would be a nightmare for performance. Besides you already said to the other poster putting these in oceans makes sense, so that resolves both problems.

Floating islands are interesting, but a bit out of place. I know that the Overworld already generates some weird stuff, but still. Regardless, I can get on board with it.
As for the dimension, no no and no. That's just utterly pointless. You shouldn't mention a new dimension until you've fully developed the idea. And just to put this out there, you can't wait for others to expand your idea. That's your job.

I like the idea of floating islands, but I'd prefer it as a separate world gen option (like amped and superflat), instead of a naturally occurring thing or a dimension.

I didn't say they would only generate over oceans; I'm saying that's where we'd have a biome specifically for floating islands. They would still not-so-frequently generate over land.
Can you go a little more in-depth on the implementation of cubic chunks? Don't worry, I'm all for just throwing it in without going through the entire concept, not being able to do that in most suggestions is IMO the hardest challenge when making a new suggestion. But still, you said you would raise the world height? How high would you make it then? And how would you want these islands to generate? Like, what types of terrain. I'm all for the idea of deliberately generated sky islands though.
Oh, and as a side note I'm just gonna remind you that Mojang attempted this a long time ago, and ended up rejecting the idea (turning the scraps into what is currently the end dimension). Not saying that that alters my opinion on this, nor should it. Besides, that was a very, very long time ago and now, especially with microsoft's funding it could be entirely more possible. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

I would say the cubic chunk part is explained in the actual cubic chunk thread (although a link would be good). But with that implemented the world could theoretically be as tall as it is wide.
As for the stuff with Mojang, they didn't reject the idea per se, they just decided to theme it around endermen instead of just making a floating overworld.

Cubic chunks is where the world renders in 16x16x16 volumes instead of 16x16 areas.
Love it. Especially the idea of teleporting back to the overworld. But how do they get to skyblock
?
I want you supporters to help me decide that.
It could work the same way it did in Story Mode, where there's a structure, and in that structure is a chest with a special, uncraftable flint & steel, which is required to light the portal, which also appears in the structure and is made of uncraftable portal frame blocks. Then, unlike in Story Mode, you would land with a return portal on the island.
Another possibility is that there would be craftable portal frames that you would arrange like an end portal, and you would have to place a diamond on each frame block to activate the portal, and then you would have to go through the portal from below, by either jumping or with an ender pearl.
Let me know what other ideas you have!
Or maybe you would arrange some portal frame blocks like an end portal, then throw a slime block into the middle. Then when you step on it, it'll launch you upward and you would find yourself in the skyblock.

If we just got rid of the mountains and overhangs, everything would be fine. After all, they allow mobs to spawn in their giant dark spots, too.

Actually, it's not that much of a problem. It helps toward making the game stop being hellishly easy.
But there was a flaw there. It wasn't devoted to floating islands, so the floating islands that did generate didn't look very good at all.
Love it. Especially the idea of teleporting back to the overworld. But how do they get to skyblock
